A fond farewell

It's with a lump in my throat I just waved a fond farewell to my A2, it has been a hard decision to come to but the nature of my work necessitates a larger vehicle.

The good news is the car has gone to another A2OC member bringing his A2 ownership to 2.

Now the search for another vehicle begins in earnest, It needs to be an estate and pref VAG group, I am going to get something with the 1.8t engine and pref 4wd, then it'll be off to Jabbasport for a 220bhp remap and elswhere for an LPG conversion and cruise control.

It's been a pleasant and enjoyable experience owning my A2, it hasn't let me down in 43000 miles requiring just service items, the only item that broke was the glovebox mechanism!

Don't forget to stick around the forums mate. I'm sure those 43k brought you a wealth of knowledge and newbies like I would really benefit from your experience.

Best update that footer though. :)

Sad to see you go Aikon - it wouldn't be Martings that is now the proud owner of your A2 would it?

BTW, not sure that you can get a gas conversion on a turbo engine, so the 1.8T may be out!

Cheers,

Mike

Had a Passat saloon with the 1,8turbo engine. Bought it in '97 and passed it on to my father with 155,000 miles after 7 years. It is a great engine. I averaged nearly 39mpg in the early years of ownership but this fell to 36mpg later. Used mainly for motorway cruising. No major items replaced just service. Only one breakdown when the alternator belt broke the day after a service, the dealer was very apologetic and had normally given excellent service.

Would'nt mind that engine in an A2.

1.8t

ive just got rid of my octavia vrs 231bhp which was jabbered great car but expensive to run £205 tax and £50 on v power a week

Updated my sig, couldn't do it on the train on my phone yesterday!

You would be spot on there Mike!

I've researched the gas heavily and these people will do the 1.8t, according to the guys over at Briskoda it takes to it well and tuning upto around 270 bhp is fine on LPG, I intend to stop at 220 with the help of Jabbasport.
I'm off to look at an A4 and an Octavia this afternoon.

I drove an Octavia 4x4 yesterday and was impressed with the handling, I think I'll get a reduction in road tax because of the LPG conversion, I certainly will get free congestion charge!

Ahhh, I had a quote from the same company last year, but at the time, they could only do normally aspirated cars, which limited my choice to a 3.2 litre TT - seems like they've uprated their technology now.

Best of luck with your new ride, but stick around here from time to time.

Cheers,

Mike

Good fuel consumption! My partner had a Passat 1.8T with tiptronic g'box when we first met - never managed more than mid 20's!

A colleague of mine has an Octavia Vrs and manages low 40's, he's quite gentle with it mind and does mainly motorway like I do.

Thankfully lpg on a turbo is no problem with the newer sequential lpg systems, I've found a mint Octavia 4x4 turbo on a 51 plate at a dealers, 40k on the clock for £4k, screen price on it has been £6k for weeks. equivalent age passat tdi 4motion is £8-9k

and a fond hello!

yes Mike, it is I whom has taken Aikon's (naythan) A2 off him!

I have been looking for another one with similar spec to mine (or should I say Lucy's........or so she thinks) and as luck would have it for me, aikon was looking to get a 'more appropriate work' car (think thats right naythan).

A2OC is the best place to start the look for an A2 as you at least know someone has wanted to look after it, in addition the advice etc that is provided on this site puts you in such a good position of knowledge.

Just a word of thanks to naythan, thoroughly nice chap, and to reiterate stick around the forums mate.

Mike ta for parts numbers, for info the trim for the auto dimming mirror was £3.57

This was the original 1.8T - a few years ago (R Reg) so maybe the newer ones are much better!

Mine was a 150bhp P reg Passat. Mostly motorway cruising. High speed but lots of feathering of the throttle. I was surprised but there you are. My dad has the car now.

Tiptronic does hammer the fuel consumption, I looked a Passat Diesel Tip and the fuel economy was 41mpg combined IIRC

A mate at work wants to sell his S4 - says he's spent £1000 on fuel in past month!!!!!

Best he's ever seen was 24mpg in gentle cruise!

Jeez, I've spent £2083 in 12 months in the Audi, a 1.8t doing 35 mpg will cost me £3451 for the same mileage, a difference of £1368 which by the time I've claimed the vat back and not paid tax on it works out at £60 a month extra in fuel, considering if I bought an A4 estate tdi I would have to get finance for circa £300 a month I reckon a chipped 1.8t looks a much better option.

I'm on my way back (ish), the Skoda got sold yesterday as my new job comes with an A3 Sportback 2.0TDi, not quite the car the A2 was but I'm not complaining!
