A2OC Donor
Hello people of A2OC,

My name is Menno. A couple of months ago I purchased an A2 with an ATL Tdi engine, building year 2005.
When it it was advertised it stated that it had a broken down turbo. I took a risk to buy it, and was lucky that there was only a hose from turbo to IC ripped.
There's still some more TLC to be done, but the first weeks I got it it's been upgraded with a CC and a re-map/closing EGR........ Things you woul'd normally do when everything else is in fine order.
These upgrades could be done by Timmus, and there was not much time to wait for it, because he was visiting the Netherlands...... the country I live in, so swift action was required to get it done before he left the country again.
Stil very happy with these extra item's, Tom did a great job!

The maintenance after a couple of month's now involved:

- New hose between turbo and intercooler
- Oil (5w40 Castrol) change and filters & broken dipstick fix...
- Air filter and interior filters
- New glow/heating plugs
- New front wheel hubs/bearings
- New CV joints at driveshafts
- New aircopump, dryer/filter and pressure sensor
- New thermostat and coolant temp sensor, and G12 liquid.
- Audi A8 "Winterfelgen" re-aligned/drilled to fit on 5X100 hubs, new tires all around (195-50/16).
And some bobs and bits I forgot about.
All this I've done myself and offcourse with some info found on A2 fora.
Tooling is present, the only things that I've bought to make life easy is an el cheapo chinese VAG OBD reader and the tooling for the wheel bearings.

Next stop is changing the wishbones. L/H side was already changed in the past (at former owner) with a new steel pressed type, but the R/H was left alone and is now looking a little bit nasty.
I've searched for a replacement pressed plate one and bought some but was not happy with the quality and difference in silent mounts and returned them to the supplier.
So in the end I bought TRW JTC1140 / JTC1141 forged ones with the "fixed" ball joint. That way I'm assured that left and right hand side are the same in terms of silent rubbers and age.

In this link to the dutch Audi A2 forum you can find some pictures to go along with this introduction:

Well that's it, I hope I may be excused for any faults in my English........

Aloha, Menno.

Congratulations on your purchase Menno - sounds like you have found a good car and are making it even better!

Good luck with your future projects and welcome to the Forum.

Mike

Hi Menno and welcome :) You've obviously well equipped with tooling and experience. Have you owned an Audi before? Your A2 must of been one of the last to be built. Has it done many kms?

Myself and quite a few members of the club have decided to retro fit the cast wishbones. We can all sleep a bit easier now!

PS your English is pretty good, better than many natives of the UK ;)

Thanx for your kind words Gentlemen.

This is not the first, I had an Audi when I passed for my drivers licence........ a rusty old Audi 80, year 1978. Although not a bad car, it's not a comparisson to an A2.
A lot of other brand cars came and went/passed along.
Just before my A2, I drove a Seat Arosa with almost the same engine; an AMF Tdi, and before that a Volvo V70 Classic with the Audi 2.5 Tdi engine.
Since I've been driving this Arosa I really got fund of the little 1.4 TDI, which can keep up with modern traffic easy, especially the ATL (mind you, they have to keep up with that one....... it's a rocket).

Tooling wise; If you're a DIY, it's some times mandatory to invest in (special) tooling........ Still cheaper and more fun, instead to bring it to the dealers.... and dirty hands for free....;).

Cheers.

Hej All,

The end came quicker then expected for my A2 ATL.
I came in to head on collision with a lady that ran a red traffic light, I was just pulling away at green and she crashed into me with around 60-80 kilometers an hour.
As well as the lady as myself there is luckily no personal injury except for some strained muscles.

To no surprise the A2 is a write off, and I'm investigating in buying another one. Unfortunely this is not gonna be a ATL TDI, because there are not many around over here in Holland, or at least not at a normal and decent price.
So I'm thinking about a BHC or an AMF.
Insurance still have to give a quote for what they will give for the write off, this will take some time I pressume.

Cheers, Menno

Glad you are well, sorry to see the loss of your aluminium treasure. This is a concern for us A2 owners, they are easily written off, looks like yours has sustained irreparable damage (economically).

Wow not good news I put the Picture up for you good luck on the hunt for a new replacement ..

Since one month or so I bought a new (to me) A2.
It's an AMF TDI, year 2003 in Amulet red, and ofcourse the clear coat has flaked on bonnet and roof.
I'm the 3rd owner of the car and it was imported from Germany to the Netherlands by the first owner.

Things which required direct attention are done by me, such as timing belt incl. waterpump and a major service check (oil, filters, brake inspection, licence plate light issues, wiperarm on window, headlight polishing etc.)
As a result the APK (Dutch MOT) passed wih no remarks, except for adjustment of headlights, which the service station did for free (well, free....... it was not stated on the invoice ;) ).

Unfortunely, the car is pretty basic. It's got no remote key entry (front L/H & R/H door got keylocks), has steeringwheel and gearknob of good ol' plastics, and more of such.
At least it's got climate control, and I managed to buy (on this nice A2oc forum) an Audi Concert CD player. The code was not included, but could purchased online and is working fine and dandy now.
Next would be cruise control, a full fis display, key remote. Hope @timmus is available upcoming august in Holland to see if it can be done to take it of the breaker and put it in the current car and let it "talk" to eachother (I'm clueless with canbus and configurating things).
Oh, and it definitly needs a re-map, it's no snail............. but it's getting close to it ?

Just messing around with posting pictures.... Seems it works!

My new Bilstein B8 with new topbearing and dust covers.
Springs are from Pi springs and where purchased here at A2OC marketplace. Happy days!

Do I say good luck. No, hope this one works out for you. I assume you kept the write off? You could start taking panels off the front, could be possibly rebuilt as long as rear chassis leg is undamaged, front ones bolt on as do all the front end. Perhaps once you take the panels off have a garage assess the chassis. That way you can run around in the new red one and over period of time rebuild the damaged one, after all it was nearly sorted pre accident.

Thanx for the luck..... hope it won't shake me to bits, with suspension it seems trail and error.....
No can do on repairing the write off....... there are some parts already been taken off and sold, and it would be too much work and parts required to fix it.
It's usefull now as a part suplier....... for the red one ;)

Any pictures of the blue one with the bonnet off? Like to see inner wings, lock carrier panel and radiators.

Any pictures of the blue one with the bonnet off? Like to see inner wings, lock carrier panel and radiators.

The blue one was hit first on the R/H frontside. It pushed the car 90 degrees to one side, front is pushed in and sideways, destroying all the radiators (Intercooler, coolant radiator, aircon matrix). Also airco pump (was just replaced ?) is hit hard and has broken mountings and hoses, same for startermotor and battery charger (dynamo, or whats the English word for it, generator?): broken of and/or cracked.
The frontwindow is smashed, and the complete front is bend out of shape against the rest of the chassis. It's now locked in gear because the shift tower is blocked by all the parts that are pushed against it.........and I didn't had time to look at the rest of the engine, maybe exhaust is bend out of shape, turbo could be hit against the firewall, and so on.

It's a closed book! Even if it was repairable: the costs woul'd outweight wat the car is worth, and besides that; I coul'd not enjoy it, knowing what impact force it had.

But hey, if you fancy to have a go at it, come over and collect it for silly money.......... oh, by the way; it's left hand drive.;)

Sorry not one for me. Unfortunately the damage does indeed sound terminal. An ideal parts car, such a shame as not many 90s left. I am sure you will make best use out of it and even help others keep their cars on the road. Tom will do his best as always to help deliver a car you are happier with from previous experience with him. Keep us informed of the progress.
