a little shaky under 2000 rpm. Normal? or motor mounts?

Hi, my A2 1.4 tdi has a problem ( i think)
This is the thing. It has driven about 190.000km.
This is my first A2 so, maybe it's normal.
When driving, doesn't mather which gear, between 1000rpm and 2000rpm, the car shakes a little. So it's no fun driving in hi gears to save fuel.
Above 2000rpm, my A2 is calm. Under, a little shaky.
Is this the 3 cilinder driving character or is there a problem with my motor mounts (i don't know how to call it else )

Hi Chandler and welcome. As an owner of 3 A2's I am not aware of this as a problem so suggest it could be as you describe. Although mine has yet to reach the same mileage as yours.

I think an 'expert' view will follow my post.

hi there

when you say shaky, are you saying that at 30mph it doesn't like 5th gear, and that the engine is labouring? and unpleasant to drive??

ours has done the equivalent of 240,000 km | 150,000 miles, and it is a bit chuggy at the above speed, lets say in the 5th, it's better in 4th.

Yes when waiting at the lights it sounds like a small tractor, but that's normal.

We are the only owner the car has ever had.

Just like jou say, unpleasent to drive in 50th arount 50 km/h Until around 80km/h
When driving slowly i almost every time have to put gears down. If i keep the car around 2000 rpm, it is smooth. Under 2000rpm, a little uncomfortable.
I know about the tractor sound:D.
Jou could also say, it sounds a little bit like a boxter engine;).
Maybe put an embleme behind the car with boxter. Some people would believe it i guess. If i chip it it will be even quicker. Nice idea:D

I agree with ULP.
My 2001 TDi does not run sweetly at much under 2000 rpm. I even use 3rd gear in 30mph speed limits as the engine response is so much better for nipping past cyclists etc

Cheers Spike

Shaky engine (maybe?)

Hi Chandler,
Is your car a tdi 90? if so, see thread 'A2 look' @ 6.10 today ref 'Dual-mass --Flywheel',( known problem), alternately you could have dodgy/worn clutch, hope i'm wrong but you do appear to have a problem, best of luck, Alan.

no mine is 75 pk (horsepower)
Does this one also have 2 flywheel?
the clutch works perfect in my opinion.

It's just not refined under 2000rpm. Every car has the same effect, but more like under 1500rpm, in hy gear. So ithink it could be quite normal. Mine is getting chipped next week. Wit more tork, it should drive better in lower rpm's. Maybe it will hel.
Otherwise i am suspecting engine mounts,
Has anyone exchanged these? Difficult? Costly?

The 75hp version has the simple flywheel.
That's how i'd summarize the engine when cold and under 2000rpm, not refined.:D That's just normal, because the turbo isn't quite totally operational when cold, and because the engine compensates by using a different timing when cold.

warm or cold doesn't mather. I noticed when pushing throttle abrubt and letting go abrubt is shaky. It must be the engine mounts that have weakened.
no one changed them before?

I have changed the one near to the cambelt. For this part it is £117, fitted at about a total of £180

Felt like the engine was about to fall out the car, feel rattling through car, clutch and gas pedel. You couldn't hear it too much outside unless you new what you was looking for it was inside and mostly when the car was in motion.

Just wondering chandler, have you been and had the car looked at to see if is the engine mount(s)? Mine did it in lower gears the most, or low rev or when the engine moved, for example: changing gear if not smoot, when you started the car up you would also hear the rattle and when you stopped the cars engine.

Mine doesn't rattle. Haven't had the time to check it out. Working way too much:D

I am more used to the A2 now and it doesn't disturb me as before, but i propebly will change one ore more later on. I mean almost 2 ton, it's not abnormal that the mounts will be looser, right?:)

Hi,
I do have the same kind of problem except that it happens between idling and 3500 rpm ! :D
Only when the engine is under load. Worse is on highway around 70 mph when I put my foot down. It becomes very loud, rough and the entire car vibrate.
At such speed, when coasting and giving some gas (gear in neutral), the engine revs smoothly and quietly, and once I go back on whatever gear, the problem is back again.
Sound like engine mount as well to you ?
Can someone tell if they are worn out just by looking at them or is it invisible?

Thanks in advance for answers
