A2 1.4 Petrol Resurection

I have a 1.4 TDI which I use for work, She's good as gold and done 150,000 miles now :cool:

A friend of mine at work asked if I wanted his wife's A2 1.4 petrol because It just snapped its cam belt. Cutting a long story short I couldn't resist the urge to get my hands dirty again.


Now she's running lovely again. Taken it out for a couple of long drives and no problems at all. One thing that is puzzling me is the throttle response, It seems really slow to pic up the revs. I've had a quick look and can see its a fly by wire throttle. Is there a way to reset or increase the response ?

remove the battery lead for 10 minutes, as it normally resets the throttle body so it learns from scratch again, but if it does not work you will need someone with vcds to reset it.
 
I just think it's a characteristic of this particular engine.

I bought a Polo with the same engine in a different state of tune back in the late nineties and it was the same. The standard none 16v engine was much more spritely at low revs. Give it a bit of welly and it should come to life a bit more :)

Thanks Jigsaw, Audi is new to me so I'm guessing that's the vagcom software. 1) Best place to grab a copy 2) what am I looking for once I have it?

You might find links in the VAG talk group on Facebook, for VCDS purchase. Otherwise the club recommendation is to buy a genuine one from the official supplier.
 
just to Add, ive owned a petrol A2, for the past three years, and mines gutless at low revs, its a bit of an art pulling away smoothly.

Everythings been serviced and checked out with no faults, through Audis, and A2 Tony`s,

The only thing I haven`t done which will improve the low rev performance is to clean the throttle body.

But if you find a way to increase throttle response, I will be interested,..
 
update the ECU would be my favourite. And feed it 98.
Assuming the throttle body, EGR valve and air filter are all clean.

I've now driven 3 1.4's (and own 2 of them) and there is a marked difference between them all even with a clean TB vs a dirty one, I think either there is something wrong I'm not seeing or the one I let go was simply not quite right. They are in fact quite spritely when needed but the pedal does take a decent shove before actually engaging the engine in some meaningful debate about increasing the revs, which I always find a bit weird.
 
i find my little A2 used to rev its pants off when i had faulty injectors, overfueling i dare say and now it is much more civilised and you have to rev it from go in first gear through the gears to keep it going, but just feathering the throttle through the gears to 2000rpm it seems fine and reasonably torque and quite happily get up to 70 cruising with out a heavy foot ..

Turns out guys my hunch was right. I had the crank one tooth out when setting up the timing.
