My Audi has developed a clunking noise when I press the accelerator pedal at low revs. There is also a faint soft knocking noise coming from behind the driver side dash/heat shield when the accelerator pedal is pressed.

My garage says that it's not the droplinks as they have checked and that I may be something making contact with the gearbox.

Also has anyone had problems like I have sourcing a rocker cover gasket.

Could it be the "dog bone" gearbox rear mount? I have 2 Tdis that do this (knock when accelerating and coming off the accelerator in 2nd / 3rd gear). I also have just bought two dog bone mounts from the 9N polo to replace the rear half of the existing mounts where the rubber bushings have probably gone bad through years of wear (the front end is different but you unbolt the two halves from each other and replace the common part that attaches to the subframe; the Polo version is less than half the price of the A2 one). I've already replaced all of the other things that knock in front of the bulkhead (ARB, drop link, strut top bearings on all of my A2s) which uncovered this as an additional source of wear-related noise.

Thank you for your information and explanation. I will be putting it in the garage to have the work done as I do not have the knowledge. It's becoming increasingly tricky sourcing some parts which is a concern in the longterm. But I just love owning this car.?

Yes when I found this out over the phone I nearly chocked. Audi's policy re historic parts retention needs looking at. It will make it increasingly tricky to keep the AS on the road.?

The vast majority of parts are fairly easy to source, particularly with assistance from the community here.

Thank you for your reply.
I had those looked at while the head gasket was being replaced last week. The garage said that they looked ok.
I'm finding it hard to get a mechanic who will solely look at the areas that I ask them to or to actually diag and repair.

I could of course go to my Audi dealership who are good people and have done bits for me in the past,,but they are so bleeding expensive.

So I still have the clunking all the way home from work this evening.
Thank you
