A2 1.4 TDI bad engine noise.

Hi all. Had a message from my wife saying the car was ticking when going up hill under load. So said I'd have a look when I got home.
So got home straight out and started the car sounded ok reved up to about 2-3 rpm had a little tap. So went up the road. Still has power and pulls ok but lound tapping noise from engine sounds like top end and timing belt end. But still runs ok.
Any help would be appreciated many thanks

My initial thought was an injector fault, but if it’s running ok and has plenty of power then it can’t be that.

Does the noise increase with revs? If so check the alternator pulley isn’t worn and moving. Could also be an idler on the timing belt. There’s so many variables that you really need to get it checked out by a mechanic if you can’t identify it yourself.

Hi there thanks for that.
Yes I will put up a video and see what you think. I am a technician so I can do the work myself. The noise dose increase with revs but at idle you can't hear anything not until about 2000rpm.
Can the injectors on these cause a pound tapping noise I have had much to do with the pd injectors.
I no the wiring runs inside the cam cover and can cause issues but this sounds like a mechanical noise inside the engine. Doesn't sound like it's from the belt area but will check in the morning.
Thanks for your help.

My bet is on injector. It sounds like it’s only firing on 2 cylinders intermittently. The fact you have no warning lights on for it would steer me to think that it’s not the wiring harness for the injectors.

Sounds like bottom end has gone to me, which tdi engine is it 75 or 90?

Does sound vary with clutch pressed

It's an 75hp. And no dose not change with clutch depressed.
How can I check if it's an injector going down is there a test or should i strip the cam cover off and look .

With VCDS you can see the amount of fuel each injector is getting with the engine running CrispyEdd showed me on my VCDS. I'd imagine that will show something.

I’ve got something similar going on with my tdi75. Already changed the loom with no difference.

Mine at idle (1st picture) and at about 58mph in 5th gear

Ideally world all three inje tors values are 0.00 I belive the values are for the adjustment the ecu makes to each injector to deliver the quantity of fuel the engine is demanding.

I may be wrong but I think k anything around 1.0 deviation is a bad injector. Meaning it's dosing to low or too high a fuel load. The other compensate by adding more or less fuel to get correct diagram across all three.

Noise sounds like something more serious to me though!

When Mr Black went down with an injector fault, power loss was obvious followed quickly by dash lights

I think it sounds more serious to but not really sure we're to start as I don't have much space at home to strip an engine out and strip it down.
