I have a 52 plate, immaculate bodywork, black A2. It’s currently sat in my drive and has been immobile for about 3 years, I’d love to get it moving again. Prior to going onto the drive the car, while out driving, would suddenly cut out & would leave me stranded until numerous attempts to restart it. I’m based in Edinburgh and wonder if there is anyone in the area who could, at a safe distance & time to suit, come and have a look and advise. Battery I completely flat. I do have both sets of keys. It’s got about 92,000 miles on the clock and seems a shame for it to be sat doing nothing & to scrap it would be a proper shame.

A failing crankshaft sensor gives those symptoms so the repair may not be too expensive.
If the battery has not been regularly charged it's likely to need replacing so it would be the first step
That would also allow a diagnostic scan which may highlight other issues but at least for a small outlay you could work out a plan to get it up and running
Now you just need a willing helper

Cheers Spike

Sounds like a bad or broken earth cable behind / under the passenger side headlight , try a jump lead on the earth point to starter body & then try starting after fully charging your battery.
(At your own risk)

If you do want to get rid of it and vanders doesn't have it, I may be interested as a new project car if I can get transport to move it. Thats if you want to sell or not?

Earth cable may prevent cranking but once running shouldnt make it cut out, crank sensor or even fuel filter could be potential causes but a fault code read is as said best place to start

It did make the engine cut out in my case. I suspect this particular earth return is shared with the alternator, leading to battery charging problems and electrical noise interference. I had spurious ABS and Power Steering lights, occasionally other ones also. I think others have reported similar. There is an interesting list of potential symptoms here https://axleaddict.com/auto-repair/Bad-Engine-Ground-Symptoms-and-Diagnosis
It's worth investigating. A little bit tricky because of poor access, but does not cost anything in parts. And as the experts at Fluke put it - poor earth ought to be ruled out early in a diagnostic investigation, often it saves time and money: https://www.fluke.com/en-gb/learn/blog/automotive/electrical-automotive-troubleshooting
