A2 1.4TDI (2002 Reg) Fuel Filter replacement interval

I have the old metal canister fuel filter on my 2002 Audi 1.4tdi. My service manual says that the fuel filter needs to be replaced every 24 months if it is not for engines with unit injector system, or every 40,000 miles if engine has unit injector system. Can anyone confirm whether my engine is a unit injector system or not? Thanks

Although the engines ARE unit injector systems I replace my fuel filter every year.
ok thanks for confirming..on the older models the fuel filter is a hassle to get to and the fixings for my exhaust heat deflector have mostly perished. If the recommended interval is therefore every 40K miles then I may hold off doing it. Yours must be the newer model post 2003 which has the removable filter design and easier access

Both filters are in the same location. Both filters have their pros and cons but are not interchangeable.

Same cover heatshield for both filters. The broken off studs can be replaced with big head bolts like these..

Cut off the remains of the studs and glue bond these in their place.

Thanks for the tip. If I glue bond these big head bolts, won't that make it difficult to remove the next time i need to replace the fuel filter

No you bond the large head end to the chassis so the thread hangs down. The heatshield is then fitted to those studs with washers and nuts - preferably plastic so as not to rust. They do not have to be very tight only locate the heatshield

What would you bond with Graham and do the big head bolts need to be stainless to avoid corrosion? This could work for my undertray broken stud on the chassis rail! Be on in time for winter then :)

Sorry, I’m a new member so not sure how to post my question…. , I’m trying to remove the diesel fuel filter HOUSING, I’ve disconnected the pipes and the star bolt but it’s still not moving, is there another bolt or is it just the wedge shaped mount that needs persuading ? It’s coming off my donor car as the one on my car seems to have been glued up on the bottom lid and can’t seem to find any available for replacement ?
Any advice gratefully received.
Cheers Simon

I must admit I’ve not done my fuel filter since purchasing the car 2 and a bit years ago. I probably should!
