A2 1.4tdi S-line vortex newbie looking for help.

Hi there people. I've had my a2 for a few years now and only just discovered this site... I've got to say, what a gem!!

So, I'm really not mechanically minded so I was wondering if there was any enthusiast in the north Manchester area who would be willing to help me get my beloved A2 back on form? There's a few issues here and there but she still flys like a go-kart and is so much fun to drive!!

Ok, so before i can drive it for said revamp, my main issue is the rear spring has snapped. I can probably do this as I've replaced these in the past on other cars. The problem is they're after market springs and the car has been lowered. I've managed to remove said snapped spring to measure (yes I should have removed the good one for this). and it measures 210mm(h) x 115mm(w). If anyone could give advice on sourcing these you'll be on my Christmas card list as 3 mechanics have turned me down so far. Also, is it worth sourcing these? I know standard springs all round would raise the car but would it really look so bad?

Looking at the threads on here it seems I'll need a cam belt/pump change too as it's seems to have been last done at 115,000 (She's currently on 157,000 :/) This I don't have the confidence to do.

Again, hat's off to all the people on here, if I hadn't discovered this site I probably would have considered scrapping, albeit with a tear in my eye.

Welcome to the forum the one and all A2 related. There are plenty of very knowledgeable members who will know doubt be along soon enough to offer you their words of wisdom, really friendly and helpful community of like minded A2 enthusiasts at hand.

Good luck with your car and I look forward to seeing it come back up to it's best.

Regards, Mark.

I think that a quick phone call to WOM Automotive is indicated. They are in Stoke and really do know their A2s.
Welcome, and good luck.

Welcome along, please post photos of your car if you can.

The go to experts for all things A2 maintenance related are WOM Automotive in Stoke.

You’ll unlikely be able to match your existing spring of its aftermarket so you’d either have to replace all 4 with a lowered set or I can sell you a pair of used but good rear srings at a good price.

You'll find @A2Steve is a very good source for parts at excellent prices, trusted and used by a lot of members on the forum so you would be in good hands.

Thanks Mark, Simon & Steve!

I'm in Rochdale so Stoke is around 1.5hrs drive for me, though I won't be driving anywhere until this spring issue is sorted.

I'll drop you a message now Steve.

Welcome. Your A2 looks good. If you use the search facility at the top of the page, entering 'Votex on standard suspension' (vortex isn't the name of the kit) you'll find a few pictures of similar A2s with standard springs. In my opinion, they look fine, and some owners comment that speed bumps aren't so much of a problem. See what you think.
Whilst I'm here, I'll tell you before anybody else does, the S-line variants were never available in the UK, if yours has badges, they will have been stuck on by a previous owner.
I use Bluestone Garage in Whitworth for all of the servicing and maintenance on my Land Rover. Although Glen, the proprietor, isn't an Audi specialist, he is a very good mechanic who works on all makes of cars and, because it's a very small business, there's no Vat on the invoices. Perhaps message him via his Facebook page or give him a call to see if he will tackle the cambelt and water pump if you want somewhere locally.

Welcome.

If you do the rear springs yourself might be worth replacing the rubber spring seats while you can. The existing seats most likely will be in a poor state or even absent. By the way the the bottom nuts and bolts on the dampers in theory should be replaced, certainly the nuts as these are single use self-locking.

Thanks for all the info Jeff... Ahh! so it's Votex! Shame, Vortex sounds so much cooler haha. Thanks for the tip on Bluestone too, Whitworth isn't far from me at all, I'll give them a call this week. I know a few garages have pulled their face as it looks like you need the hands of a three year old to get in there.

Thanks Andy. The rubber seat that came off with the broken spring actually looks in pretty good nick but i guess for the sake of a few quid, and seeing as I'll be under there anyway, I may as well replace them as with the nuts & bolts. Any suggestions on part no's/sources for these?

When changing your rear springs, you can either undo the bottom bolt on the shock and use spring compressors to try to compress the spring enough to come out (this will take about an hour for both sides) or........

You get a fat friend to stand on the rear drum so the spring almost falls out and the job takes about 10 minutes ?

Good Evening,

Fair enough if the rubber seats look in good nick leave them, do not waste money.

In answer to your questions...

The go-to site for part numbers is 7zap, suggest you bookmark/add to favorites..

(You can change the year).

Navigate down to rear suspension..

Genuine parts can be purchased from Crewe Audi on here, just send a PM of requirements or TPS if your local TPS will serve you as a member of the public

Non genuine parts (aftermarket equivalents) can found from any of the myriad of parts sites, Autodoc etc, eBay is good.

When searching for parts quoting the part number tends to yield more success.

Hi welcome to the forum, first i would like to say what a nice car, have you keeped it garaged? Also there's a couple of garages i have used in rochdale in the past I will get the details for you there is a place in shawclough that manufacture
springs or at least they did 10years ago.

S.A Auto Centre Ltd
Buckley Rd, Rochdale OL12 9BF

This garage is good they call him proffeser he is not the cheapest but not to expensive either, he dose a good job i normally take my a2s there.

Thank you Roger & Andy, lots of great info there, much appreciated. I don't keep my car garaged but I do give her a deep clean and wax twice a year, usually in autumn and the spring. It's due any day now and takes a few hours but well worth the effort.

I'm currently trying to source temp, fan and drivers side window control buttons. Seems quite common for these to scratch so they're looking quite messy. I'll also need to get the alloys refurbished at some point.

A few hours to deep clean!!! It takes me two days to give it the works, then again I am getting to the point where I need a break every five minutes?
