A2 36k Service

Hi,

Purchased a 2 owner 03 A2 1.6 FSI Sport with 36k miles for my wife recently. The PO in Northern Ireland had the car serviced by a friend who worked in an Audi dealership so it didn't have an official ASH. Did a HPI check which was fine. The price was right so we took the plunge.

Left the car into the Audi dealer in Belfast for a service. They recommended that the timing belt be done since the car was over 5 years old. It also needed a service since it was just over a year since it was last serviced.

As I mentioned in a previous post, a headlight needed replacing as the glass looked as though it was "sand blasted". The two front door stays were also "clicking" loudly which they recommened that we replace.

They also said that the brake fluid and coolant also needed changing. The rear brake pads were also 80% worn so they also need replacing.

They told me that the work would cost £1,630. This is a bit more that I was expecting. Does this sound right for a main dealer? I had a figure closer to £1k.

OK, budget the following:

Cambelt service: £300 (several main dealers are doing this price now for A2s)
Normal 40K longlife service: £200
Headlamp: £100 plus 0.5 hours labour
Door check straps: £50 plus 1 hour labour
Brake service: £80
Coolant:£10 and labour should be included in cambelt service
Pads:£30 plus 1 hour labour.

Total should be in the region of £900 - 1000. I'd also get the water pump changed whilst the cambelt is being done. I think they're pulling your plonker a little!

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks. I'll review their bill in detail and challenge anything that I think is OTT. Your estimate is in line with what I thought.

As with any service, 75% of the bill will be service. They charge £80 per hour. That probably doesn't include VAT.

My driver's side door check strap also "clicks" loudly. I've tried greasing it, but this has not made much difference. Is it safe enough leaving this as is, or should I get it sorted?

Service cost

Hi Ken,

I guess you are talking about Isaac Agnew in Belfast? Their stunning service charges have been mentioned on here a few times. Conclusion is that the free evening newspaper, coffee and tray-bakes served up by (attractive) female staff are what drives up the cost. Your car will also be washed and vacuumed. The choice is yours, but what matters is how your car is treated. There are other mechanics who can do the work required for a more competitive price. Perhaps we need more Audi main dealers in this part of the world, to create some competition.

John.

It'll be safe enough, but parts to fix are less than £20. If you have the aptitude, it can be self-fixed in an hour or so,

Cheers,

Mike

Hi John,

Yes, that's right. As you say, their service, facilities and showroom are excellent. They also drove my wife and myself into the city to shop and get lunch when the car was being done. We were chaufered in a new A6 Avant. They seem to have a guy employed to do nothing else only drive cusotmers around.

I was told that they're planning on moving into spanking new offices on Queen's Island early next year.

I live in Dublin and have had an Allroad since new (2003). I have found the Audi service in the South to be very poor. They charge much the same prices as Agnews, but the service and technical expertise is well below par.

Agnews are expensive, but they are very good technically. I've also found that Audi dealers down here have problems getting parts. I was trying to arrange a major service on the allroad a couple of years ago and it took a dealer nearly 6 weeks to get in the parts. I told them to forget it and went to Agnews for the first time. They had all the parts within two days and did a great job. I knew from talking to them that they knew the Allroad well. There's not many of them down here so dealers generally don't have a clue.

I live in North Dublin so Agnews is only 90 mins away and will be less as the motorway develops. It's also nice to visit Belfast. It's one of my favourite cities in Ireland.

Hi Ken,

With the opening of the Victoria Square development, the choice of shops has increased. There are many more visitors to Belfast these days, but no where near the numbers in Dublin.

I too have had the Avant treatment when my car was younger. When everything goes smoothly, the service is first class. However, the last two times that I had my car serviced there, they kept me waiting for over an hour each time I collected my car. The car was with them at 8:00am and I had arranged to collect the car at 4:00pm, so I don't think they had any excuse. I now get my car serviced by an independent and my car is none the worse for it, and I get return flights to Spain for me and the Wife with the money I am saving...

John.

Hi John,

I was in Victoria Square on thursday and it's very impressive. Ok, it's not Dublin yet, but Belfast is getting there. Was also in the Odessy with the kids and it's fantastic.

I'll PM you for details on the independent. I'm not aware of any VAG independents down South.
