A2 doesn't like frost

Once again I am turning to the knowledgable chaps in the club for assistance, now that the cold frosty weather is upon us I have found that our A2, which lives out on the drive, will not respond to the remote fob when its iced up overnight. I can unlock it manually with the key (once I have defrosted the locks!!) but it just does not repond to the remote. I am assuming this is not common, but am ready to be corrected. Any suggestions would be most welcome as to any likely cause or way of rectifying this slightly inconvevient fault.

You are right in saying that this is an uncommon problem, however, I think the fix will be simple enough:

Put a new battery in your fob!

Yes, I know it sounds simple, but in cold weather, those little thin CR2032 batts really need to be fresh or warmed up to work properly.

Try it and report back..

Cheers,

Mike

The great thing about the A2 in cold weather is the instant heat you get within 2 minutes of driving from the preheater.

I once saw Clarkson put a Mercedes-Benz key against his head to extend its working range. It must amplify the signal or something - I have no idea whether this works with Audi keys or indeed whether this is useful information!

Cheers

Yes, that old chestnut!

It does actually work, though god knows how. Thing is though, the battery needs to be in a decent state to begin with, so if you have a battery that is on its last legs, the trick will not work.

Just got in and have read and digested all suggestions. Tomorrow will try new batteries in both fobs and report the findings. Thanks to all for their input. Cheers.

Have a read up of the handbook before replacing the batteries as you will probably have to re-sync the fobs to the car. Forewarned is forearmed.

Taken a while to get round to swapping the batteries in the fobs, due to christmas, however thats all done now. Unfortunately the frosty weather has gone so I cannot tell if the original problem has gone until the frosts return, here's hoping.

Right then, having fitted new batteries to both fobs, found that the range for working was considerably improved so just waited for cold weather to return to see if the lack of response to fobs also returns. Tried this morning after a light sprinkling of overnight snow, although outside temp not particularly cold, and the car will not respond to either fob again. The car just does not like the cold, maybe its just sulking 'cos it can't live in the garage!! I know we can just use the key to unlock and get in but after heavy frost that is often difficult as the barrel is frozen up so I would appreciate any suggestions as to resolving the issue. I've never known a car to not respond to the remotes just due to cold!

It's a new one on me as well, but all that I can suggest is that the cold is causing some metal component to shrink and possibly stop making contact.

I'll have a look at the schematics to see if there is a likely culprit

Cheers,

Mike
