A2 Hours old!!

Hi
I'm after some advice for my little sister who unfortunately had her Toyota Yaris written off recently & decided to buy an A2 as she likes the one my wife has.
So after a couple of weeks searching she finally found the perfect A2(1.4 petrol SE) for her budget & spec, drove over 125 miles to see it and bought it off a dealer & on the way home it broke down several times!!:(
When you start the engine there is initially a squeak sound similar to a slipping fan belt but im not sure it's that?
Then the oil warning buzzer & light comes on (although the oil level is fine)
The revs do not show on the dashboard even though it is ticking over ok?
And sometimes the accelerator has no effect if your rev it?
Any ideas??

Thanks in advance

Mark & little sister Kelly

ps. she was hoping to come to Chatsworth this weekend so here's hoping it's a simple/cheap fix!

Welcome to the forum and A2 ownership, sorry to hear your sister is having problems. However Isn't this something you should be talking to the 'dealer' about fixing? Presumably your sister got a warranty.......Sounds a sthough he has sold a car he should be taking back or sorting out for you. Suggest try contacting trading standards if you get no joy from the vendor. Hope you get sorted out!

welcome to the forum. Let's see what can be done.

First, you need to speak to the dealer, this is clearly a car with issues.

The initial squeaky sound is most likely from a dirty starter motor. Common case on A2, as well as many other cars. There is nothing to worry about, I've had squeaky sound for years and my car starts first time, every time.

I'm not questioning your ability to read the oil level dip stick. But the A2's dip stick is known to be rubbish and extremely difficult to see exactly what level it is. I suggest you add a bottle of engine oil and see if warning still persist. Don't forget, the dealer should really pay for this bottle of oil as well.

No rev on the dashboard... It is quite an obvious thing TBH, did your sister notice that during the test drive before buying? Or did it stop working after she's bought it?

As for the accelerator, I'm not sure yet. It will perhaps need a diagnostics scan. But I would get the dealer to sort that out.

good luck!

Wiould agree about oil checking, even as an experienced motorist the dipstick on the A2 has to be the worst by far on any car I have owned in over 50 vehicles.... just add a quarter litre at a time allowing for it to settle a few minutes before checking and adding anymore.

Hi

Hi Mark & little sister Kelly, As these cars are 'drive by wire' (no accelerator cable just wires) Sometimes when the battery has been disconnected a while or other work has been carried out, then the accelerator will have to be calibrated. This will require you to have diagnostic equipment like Vag Com to do this. Also you can scan the car for other faults using this software. If you don't have this then you can see if there is a Vag com member here that is near you to help. I am in London so I think that I am too far to do this for you.

The Rev counter is a wierd issue, again you'll need to scan to see if anything comes up.

All these issues lead me to believe some work (good or bad?) has been carried out on this car, and I suspect it wasn't that well skilled labour used either.

As Adrian888 says, you should be talking to the dealer that sold you this car 1st, which dealer was it then? what warranty have they given you?

Cheers

revcounter might be a loose needle - mine starts at 5 o'clock at the moment - but it's unlikely.

Accelerator "no effect" has nothing to do with an uncalibrated throttle body. Without calibration (which it will try to do when the battery is reconnected), the pedal is more binary and less eager to close the throttle, but no major problems. I drove mine like that for a year or so with no real issues.

Bret, he has exactly the same issue with the accelerator as I did when I got my car started. It isn't a 'no effect' it is sometimes (intermittently). I calibrated it and it has been perfectly spot on ever since (15 months now).

Cheers
