A2 parked up for 12 years!

I would get the belts done etc then mot see what it fails on and get all of that rectified. All advisory items can be undertaken over the coming months to spread/even out the cost. Or if you can afford it, just get everything done at once. Then a professional or good paint correction.
All of the above on a one owner car😳. Wow😍

Very almost gave my wife’s 1.4 away (her insistence of course), she had second thoughts because she likes it, knows it and virtually everything has been done.
Blue Storm with 76k and panoramic roof.
It will go into garage next month for mot a major service and a blank cheque😂

The great thing about an A2 as a project like this is you know there won't be any rust to deal with -
I agree with the sentiments expressed in your posting about keeping it. The rear axle/subframe and front sub-frame and suspension components are steel. If the wishbones are steel (later models) rather than cast (earlier models) then they are prone to rust from the inside. Provided the car was not laid up in winter whilst coated with road salt and not sat in long grass on the drive it should be OK. These things should be checked as part of the MOT but postings on the forum shows some garages are less diligent than others. Hence good suggestion to go to B&F.

If you find that you have to spend £3k on having a fully functional car, just think what could you purchase for £3k today that will put many cars to shame in 5/10 years. The aluminium body and quality of paintwork on the A2 can only be admired. Respect on whatever route or decision you make….. but a one owner car….. a very rare occurrence today😳

Do have a word with Gary at B&F in West Hounslow. He will go through the car and tell you with complete accuracy what needs doing now, and what can safely be left until next time. Above all, they know their A2 stuff and do not charge silly money. As an aside Gary also services Boeings down the road.

I wholly agree with "my learned friends" above.

I wish you all the very best.

Hi everyone,

Just read through everyone's comments and advice and thanks once again.

I spoke to both B&F in Hounslow and WOM in Uttoxeter and am leaning towards WOM as they are only 40 mins from me and therefore easier to check the car's progress and pick up at the end when all the work is done. It will of course cost me more to transport it up there from Surrey.

Both have agreed to pick up and give the A2 full inspection and then make a plan from there. If they feel it is not worth restoring they say that I can either sell it from their site or they will take it for parts and that I will probably just recover my transport costs. WOM are a little more relaxed about this whereas B&F are pushed for space so would need the car removing straight away.
Thanks to Mightyleader for offering to take a look at the car in Surrey. Much appreciated but I cannot have people viewing the car in Surrey as my ex mother-in-law just is very elderly and just wants it gone so I think this is the best option.

Everyone has mentioned B&F more than WOM in the thread. Is there a reason for that? Should I change my mind to B&F? Would they do a better/ cheaper job?

I think the recommendations are based on your car being nearer geographically to Gary Sarah. Both are trustworthy and reasonable price wise so its entirely up to you which choice you make . 👍

Once WOM has let you know what is required, let the forum know as well. There is many on here who will guide you going forward.
If you do not need the car just now, you could get WOM to perhaps conclude the work when they are not busy and then perhaps pay them £200 pm. That lessons the hit on you and presumably will get you a cracking car at the end. If you do not ask the answer would always be negative so speak to WOM.

Echoing @Dave M - I for one mentioned B&F based on proximity to Surrey. Last year I was on holiday in the Peaks and took the opportunity to visit WOM for the first time. My A2 had a rear knocking sound when going over bumps/potholes ever since the suspension was renewed 10 years ago. It was getting on my nerves.

My Audi/VW dealer could not diagnose the problem and much of the suspension has been renewed again recently. Within minutes into a test drive Gary knew the cause - the top mount. He said that they fail very rarely so I must of had a dud. Within an hour new ones had been procured and fitted and I was on my way and enjoyed the rest of my holiday. When I was there they had I recall about 10 A2s in for various works!

Hi everyone,
Not good news I'm afraid!! Rob has taken a good look at my A2 up at WOM in Uttoxeter and it needs 3,500-4,000 pounds spending on it to get it up to scratch not the 1,000 or so I had in mind.

Not viable for me as I can't do any of the work myself.

I am sorry to say so will be letting it go for parts. Sad day 😭😭

Sorry to hear that

Most of that will be labour costs. I dare say a member on here would be happy to take on a low mileage one owner car to DIY restore it back to the road rather than see it go for parts.
