A2 spec manufacture codes | How to decode | useful links

I struggle to find a way to verify the correct equipment code for the Electric Additional Heater that was an option to 2004 and 2005 diesels.
It is possible that it was an option for petrol car too, though never seen one my selves.

When I call people wrt if the car they are selling, have the Electric Additional Heater, none have the slightest idea...
If I could get the correct code, it would save me from a 3-8 hour drive to check my selves.

For those wondering if the Webasto is not an option? For me; no. A new Webasto unit cost me £1200 ish. I have had four cars with Webasto, all of them long-runners, the Webasto is not alive in any of them...

Mrs dieselfan has an 2004 BHC with the beloved "Electric Additional Heater" and we are very impressed with all aspects, it clear the windows inside and outside fast, both inside and outside even in really low temperatures, no Webasto exhaust into the cockpit when starting the car after a heavy snowfall either....

What is the difference between 7E4 and 7EB and the same for 7E6 and 7E7 ?

and this cut from vag codes. com list:

and here, one of the LHD cars I have considered to buy. It is said to have the "Electric Additional Heater" which is so important for me.
I hope to get help to "brake the code" ?

EDIT - I have changed the heading since several added very essential info and links related to how one can decode, and when the tread was pinned, it is better to focus on value for the Forum.

@audifan , I do not think I have the full answer, yet, since I have no idea what the difference between 7E6 and 7E7 is ?
The different option codes most likely cover the different combinations of parts required for electrical heating with other options, e.g. whether combined with A/C or manually controlled heating. They may also cover the different alternators required, depending on region. There are also two different heaters.

Sorry for a thread hijack but where physically is the electric additional heater fitted and would this be a possible retrofit option?

I’m thinking it could be added in addition to a fuel-powered heater as an extra comfort option. Presumably with a larger alternator if needed.

Thanks guys. That’s really helpful. It looks like a PTC element or something. Could perhaps be fitted with a relay and cabin switch. Some pretty beefy power cables too.

it is a PTC and yes, you're looking at 16-20mm2. I don't see the benefit over a fuel-fired system - the fuel-fired will be just as fast to put heat out.

I think a cheaper and more manageable solution if you want PTC and Webasto would be to buy a car heater that plugs into the 12V socket. Much less plumbing and cheaper.

I am very interested in the retrofit option too, so please share if you find out any ?

When using the additional electrical heater at low fan speed and high temperature I must say that it smells quite "hot", my electrical competence is not impressive but my alarm bells goes off by thinking of connecting this another way than it is meant to....

The 12v socket options are limited to 8-10amps so maybe you get 75 or 80 watts of heat. And it’s a THING sitting on the dash. Which is annoying.

A PTC of 900watts built into the blower system is just so much more slick.

I fitted a replacement Webasto and it does make a difference to heat up time but there is still quite a wait for demisting to happen and for really short journeys I turn off the Webasto because the car isn’t going to heat up enough.

It just seems like a pleasing upgrade. Presumably the plastic parts and ducting are interchangeable to some extent too so it could be a Lego option with some additional wiring.

Plastic wise I think only number 7 is different. The biggest issue I can see is getting the controller to activate the Webasto AND the electric heater at the same time. 2003 all heaters were 1500W so you would have to find one from an early non Webasto car, if that is even possible.

Get the remote set up for the Webasto and start heating 3-4 minutes before leaving the house, as you start finding your stuff. Where it's only +3 or so, that's enough to get a good head start. When it's -20, only 30 mins is enough.

Bear in mind your 900W is 150A, so that's your entire battery capacity gone in less than 20 mins. There's a reason it was only one or the other.

too many fun projects.

I actually have a coolant circulation pump, a remote controlled switch, some relays and a Webasto arduino control board sitting in my half-built shed so I should probably just finish that set up as you recommend.

I looked at all this for Merlin, I came to the conclusion that for pre-heating, if I had a Webasto-equipped car I would have gone for the remote control option that Webasto does as above, however as Merlin is a later A2 with the electric element, the best option in my case was the Calix / Defa block heater, also with some kind of remote control. So that’s what I’ve done.
