A2 suddenly loses power 1.4 tdi

Hello, my 2001 A2 has two faults, the first is a symbol on the dash of an oil can and the word sensor on it, the symbol is orange in colour, i understand its a warning for low engine oil, the oil is okay as it can be checked on the dipstick, can`t find a sensor on the sump, sometimes the fault goes off and the ambient temp display comes back on as normal, has anybody had this fault?.

My next fault is a sudden loss of power-as though the turbo has stopped operating, i have changed the MAF sensor and this seemed to improve the car, the fault only seems to happen when on the motorway and accelerating to overtake, i have been told this is now a turbo problem with it overboosting and then the engine ECU cuts the power, again anybody had this problem, any info gratefully received, thanks Andy.

Hi Camperman, welcome to the A2oc

Faulty oil level sensors are fairly common - see link http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?t=6544&highlight=oil+sensor
The loss of power is likely to be an air leak in the charge air system - the most common fault being a split where the plastic end covers join the intercooler core - see link for more info http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8960&highlight=split+intercooler
There are other (less likely) problems with the turbo boost control system which can also cause the engine to go into limp home mode so check everything out before buying parts

Hello Spike, thanks for that info, the oil sensor as far as i have been told is only fitted to petrol A2`s, if its on the diesel, do you know where its located on the engine?, many thanks Andy.:)

On diesels, fitted to the front of the engine sump, more to the right, looking from the front. Best done when you change your engine oil.

Hello, after further inspection for the loss of power, whilst the car was raised on ramps, found 2 vacuum pipes going to the turbo, one pipe made of plastic which locates into a rubber pipe which connects to the turbo had come apart, reconnected this, after going for a spin up the motorway-the fault seems to have cleared, watch this space.

As for the oil level sensor, there doesnt appear to be a sensor anywhere on the sump, so still need to find the reason for the oil sensor display on my dashboard, anymore help on this would be gratefully received, thanks Andy.:)

Can't remember off the top of my head whether the 75PS TDi is the same as the 90, but on my car (90), then oil level sensor is on the side of the sump, same side as the cambelt.

There is the usual round-ended black connector going to it, as you'd expect.

It's possible to get to it with a set of axel stands as this is what I did last year when I thought it was duff (turned out to be a small fire in a related wiring loom).

Also, on a separate note, my first A2 was the 75PS SE and that had a problematic oil light issue, which was solved under warranty, but only after Audi replaced the sensor AND the clocks! It turned out that the logic circuit in the clocks was to blame, but only found this out after a new sensor failed to clear the problem.

Cheers,

Mike
