A2 TDI 90 sport turbo 2004 ATL limp mode back

Met up with the lovely @Cenick (Steve) and did a scan after marvelling at his completey loaded A2 with votex!

17965 - Charge Pressure Control: Positive Deviation P1557 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

I will clean Map sensor today as I think it may be struggling. I got no limp on way home even after pushing to 93mph for a bit on m5.

Having heard Steve's turbo mines definitely on its last legs!

Hi Edd, glad I could help out with a scan.

You have a bagged yourself a very nice A2 and I’m sure you’ll get the few problems you have sorted!

RossTech Wiki has these as possible causes for the error code;

Boost Pressure too High
Hoses/Pipes incorrect connected, disconnected, blocked or leaking
Charger Pressure Control defective
VNT (variable nozzle turbo): nozzles stuck
Solenoid Valve for Boost Pressure Control (N75) defective

I know you’ve checked the hoses for leaks so it could be the VNT and with the history your mentioned that could make sense?

Steve

Had this problem with a Merc turbo and Forte turbo cleaner would improve things for for a couple of months. The only fix was to remove the turbo strip it and clean it. Mine didn't whistle or sound wrong, it just didn't work.
As yours is noisy I wouldn't waste time getting in there; you don't want it going bang at 90+ mph.

Thanks Steve. Top man

Just a llittel update on this thread, I have had the turbo reconditioned with new innards and such, had to wait a week for bits. Will test it for limp mode later tonight, first impressions very good and no noise anymore and lag virtually dissapeared. I also changed the all vacuum hoses for Samco ones to be certain.

Fingers crossed for a good outcome for you on this - I had a very similar issue quite a few years back and never got to the bottom of it, so very interested to see if the turbo itself solves the boost problem. One garage red lined mine and told me there was no problem - only uphill over 3000rpm would trigger it. Ignition off and on and problem solved, until the next time……

HI, I can confirm all is good! Managed to climb a motorway hill flat out into triple figures and no limp so it must be fixed! Turbo had play longways on shaft, maybe the hoses were duff, either way now sorted. happy days!
