A2 TDI BHC balance shaft chain replacement.

Hi all, haven’t posted for a while.

I have a 53 plate 1.4 TDI with 75 hp BHC engine No. 003273. The question I have is do all/any BHC engines have balance shafts? I’ve spoken with my local Indy Audi / VW specialist and he says that according to his listing it hasn’t got one. I’m very keen to get the chain/gear/tensioner replaced as I’m on 235,000 miles and I have no history of it being replaced. I’ve owned the vehicle for 8+ years and around 100,000 miles.
Thanks.
Lee.

All of the 1.4 tdi engines have a balance shaft
Needed because of the 3 cylinder design
Any garage that does not know this should not be trusted to work on the engine in my book

Are there any warning signs of problems with the balance shaft drive chain, such as unusual noises?

They tend to rattle at tick over heard from the lower part of the engine around the crank shaft pulley

@scruffylookin29 excellent idea to change the chain, tensioner and sprockets, failures have been reported at under 150,000 miles so yours is “due”, albeit it was never part of the Audi maintenance schedule. You may have seen the excellent post on this subject posted here by @Sarge but I’m linking it here for you and all other TDI owners that haven’t.

I see you’re based in South Wales (I think, my knowledge of Welsh geography is patchy!), it may be worth seeking a garage that knows the A2 and for example knows how to avoid damaging the aluminium shell by jacking / lifting it correctly - easy to do if they don’t take care. @A2Steve may be able to suggest somewhere (or else if you trust this garage, be very firm that they only jack the car in the correct place and also that they consult the diagram @Robin_Cox has shared above.

Good luck.

Just came across this video, maybe of interest. ( Includes balance shaft chain replacement )

Excellent, thank you.

Having put this off on the basis my car came in for £300 and the actual likelihood of failure is pretty low, now the car has ended up being my sole A2 (and favourite) I'm getting more tempted to do it.

If a bunch of us do them at the same time that could work well as a hands-on information pool. I know @philward did an excellent guide somewhere on here: just off to work so no time to look at moment ...

Prior to Alison's being changed last October, there was a resonance at about 3000 rpm under load.

Once this was changed, that resonance disappeared.

Please see the Balance Shaft and Oil Pump Drive Chain thread for pictures of Alison's worn Tensioner... ?
