mine is a bit like that too. and i know that my timing is a bit out as i have tinkered with it.
if you have done big miles and not done the belt then it may have stretched and be out of tolerance for the pick up to send the correct pulse to the ECU within the perameters only when enough stress is put on it when it is started. you may want to check your timing marks. A kit to do this is only about £15 but you will have to strip quite a few bits off to see it all. Good luck
