A2 TDI is a pig to start from cold

mine is a bit like that too. and i know that my timing is a bit out as i have tinkered with it.
if you have done big miles and not done the belt then it may have stretched and be out of tolerance for the pick up to send the correct pulse to the ECU within the perameters only when enough stress is put on it when it is started. you may want to check your timing marks. A kit to do this is only about £15 but you will have to strip quite a few bits off to see it all. Good luck

Finally got it sorted!!

just a quick note to say, finally got it sorted, had to resort to taking to the audi stealership though.

The diagnostic check revieled nothing. Only my advice (that i had got from this forum) suggesting it might be the fuel filter.

well they took it out and found a non standard filter in. They were not sure whether this was the cause, but it seems to have cured it.

just a warning about using pattern parts.

thanks for all your advice.
