A2 Tyres - H or V rated?

MOT time and i'm sure i'll need a tyre. Been looking online for quotes on continentals and they are either V rated or H rated. What was the original spec and can you use the lower H rated tyre? Thanks, Mark

thanks skipton, although the H is rated at 130mph and I don't think the wife will be doing over 70! Are they V rated as standard?, sorry i'm at work so I can't pop out to check, just in case you thought I was a lazy git!

re. "sorry i'm at work"

And it's highly likely that Mike is as well!

Whilst it may seem like he's a 24/7 A2OC "ask me anything and I'll respond instantly" support service, surely you can check the rating of your car's tyres yourself?

Goodwill is, after all, a reciprocal thing and not to be presumed infinite.

i think you misunderstand me, i'm at work and trying to get quotes, but my car is at home and i'm not home till 9pm. All I wanted to know was, are they V rated as original, no need to get touchy Alan.

Now then, now then!!!

Yes, I'm at work filming the Jeremy Kyle Show until 10pm, so I beat you on that one;)

Your question is a bit of a non-sequitor, as Contis were very rarely (ever?) fitted as standard tyres, they were normally supplied with Michelin Pilot Sports, Pirelli P6000 or Dunlop SP9000 tyres.

Whatever you choose, there will be no MOT comebacks as long as the tyre is rated over 70mph. Get a quote on the V if you want to play it safe though and replace both tyres on the axel at the same time too.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks Mike for the info, much appreciated. So you in the broadcast industry too. I'm a graphic designer at BBC London, happy days and try and get it in focus!

Not sure how accurate this info is but this is some of the stuff I've read on tyre selection over the years -
Tyre speed rating should be at least equal to the car's top speed. (I've heard tales of insurance companies using this as an excuse not to pay out on performance car claims)
Using tyres of a higher speed rating than needed may help turn in and cornering due to the stiffer carcase construction but this may be at the expense of ride comfort (every little helps on an A2) Also, the harder rubber compounds combined with the stiffer construction tend to reduce wet grip.

Cheers Spike
