Hi peeps thought I give you guys some update on my new car. Had some shocking news and thought that I will need to look for new engine at some point! Huge oil on belly pan and belt slipped. This is the original cambelt from 2001 factory! You can see the broken pulley. It was just a miracle that the engine did not blow up with that broken pulley, my friend was shocked and said he has never seen that before in his 20 years career. I was biting my finger nails when he sent me pics.

Sensor reading on cluster although engine is stone cold. He then disconnected the sensor and gave a higher reading, soon as he plugs it back in it returns to same reading so clearly at fault.

Massive credit to my friend JanV8 (mechanic) who is dealing with this whole saga. I bought the car a week ago as I said in my intro post, It was owned by a senior gentleman in his 70s for the last 18 years. Car had issues with starting recently so he did not want to put any further money on it and decided to buy new car and sell this. It was sold with the description as starting issue when hot. AA advised him that it’s likely Immobiliser and the usual garage sparky said Temp sensor, I thought that’s ok I will get that looked at plus the belts all freshened as the seller advised that he cannot recall getting the belts done! I was mortified when my mechanic sent me the pictures of the pulley broken, he advised me to stay on standby as he was not sure what damage was caused, to make matters worse, there is a bad oil leak. I bought the cam belt kit from carparts4L as it was cheaper than Euros although they are same Co. I also bought the genuine water pump and fuel flap release button from Stealers. I can see in the folder of receipts that the garage the previous owner used did advise of the Cambelt being due!

So far my friend said the car turns over ok, he pressure tested it and seems good. The oil leak he thinks might be due to sump plug seal or bolt not tight enough. He also advised that it might’ve been overfilled at the last service in Jan 21. Plan is to drain oil and see the condition, if it’s bad in colour then flush and replace with new. He also pointed that the temp sensor is at fault as the car hesitates to start. I need to order new sensor tomorrow. Not sure shall I get from stealer or Euros?? Thanks for reading guys I will keep you posted.

Main dealers for the temp sensor. The euro car parts ones I’ve fitted in the past either do t work correctly or if they do for not very long
About £30 at the dealers
Sound like you may have had a lucky escape

Yes for any engine sensors (or for thermostats) best to buy genuine parts, aftermarket don’t work or work properly or work for long as Paul says

Also check the bottom of the corrugated oil filler pipe as even if it wasn't split and oil leaking from it, it probably will be now if it wasn't disconnected at the top before the engine was lifted to replace the cam belt. Hopefully it was as it's just a simple squeeze connector ?

My mechanic friend suggests we do a engine flush and new filter and oil with sump plug. He is not too sure if it’s the sump plug that is at fault as you can still see oil leaking from there. Ordered 10L of oil so can flush and then run new oil and drain before putting new oil again. I am hoping it’s the grease monkeys who last serviced it did not bother changing the sump plug and seal. Pray for me??

Friggin Stealers wanted near enough £50 for damn sensor! Checked with local Skoda they said best they could do is £42. Ended up getting Febi one from bay for £10! My mech checked all the readings on VCDS with temp etc and it all tally’s up.

Further update. My mech friend sent me updates. We did an engine flush and now realised the cause of leak! Muppets who looked after the car (or lack of) screwed the sump bolt too hard or wrongly. I am praying that the new plug does the trick and no oil leak. Worst case will need SH sump.

Draining the oil again after Flush. Oil looks clean. Now hoping after new oil the sump plug holds and pray for no new leak?
