A2 with "Bee Sting" aerial ??

I'm looking at replacing my recently written-off 1.6 FSi Sport (an idiot in a Toyota Hi-Lux pick-up decided to use me as a bump stop ) with an 04 plate, it has a roof mounted "Bee Sting" aerial; I don't recall seeing an A2 with one of these before; could it be something to do with the "Symphony" stereo?? Or something else? My previous one had an "open sky roof" Any info much appreciated. Cheers.

Can you post a picture of the aerial? The term 'bee sting' will say different things to some. The only OEM aerial fitted to the roof of the A2 was part of the GSM phone prep kit. Its a bee sting style, but quite distinctive too. If you have this, there will be a holder for a phone cradle on the passenger side of the centre console beside the gearstick.

If there isn't, its maybe a bit of over zealous modding, as the reception for the radio is linked into the rear window I think. Give it a 'waggle' and see if its just bonded on with sicaflex! ;)

+1 for Murdo's reply. Sorry to hear of your A2 being written off by the way. Hope no-one was hurt? Did you get a good pay-out from the insurer?

Thanks chaps. I haven't got a picture of it, but I've been looking for pictures of others & think I've seen the OEM one, it looks quite stumpy? The one on the car I'm looking at is a longer, thin one (looks similar to the one on my wife's Nissan Cumquat!) I did wiggle it a bit but not too much, it didn't seem massively secure, I suppose it could just be cosmetic. And there is no evidence of the phone cradle.
My A2 was 1.6 FSi Sport '53 plate leather, climate, open sky...I'd just put Koni FSD's on, new Pirelli's new rear discs & pads all ready for Mot, 4 days previous.
Still negotiating with insurance....! Deep Joy.

I have a bee sting on mine, but I retrofitted it for DAB, FM/AM, GPS & GSM.

The A2 can have a bee sting for the phone system according to ETKA.

Will you be buying the car back of the insurance ? Sounds like you have a decent spec FSI . If your going to get another A2 , might be worth keeping the old one for parts etc . especially the leather interior , they go for good money nowadays .

Hello again, well I've bought the '04 plate 1.6 Fsi Sport, cosmetically pretty good, had a bit of paint around wheel arches, also the lower (normally black) grille, cills & lower panel at the back have been "body coloured" (akoya silver), black leather, Symphony stereo, 100k. The thing I miss the most tho' is cruise control that my previous one had (not so worried about the open sky or electric Rr windows) can this be retro-fitted with original parts (stalk etc) My previous one was the silver blue (crystal?) with silver grey leather.
It has a couple of things not quite right but will get sorted after reading about similar things on here...rough running when up to temp, moisture in boot area, wiper arm "tapping & scraping" on screen. I've cleaned up the earth cable connection behind the headlight, no improvement so far, the history shows the car has already had 6 (yes six!) new coil packs in the last 4 years, so am thinking temp sensor, crank sensor, lambda sensor..oh well.
Any other quick thoughts much appreciated.
In answer to redbull_a2 I didn't want to buy back the old car think it's been taken off to breakers yard already...

Cruise control can be retrofitted. A few members on here can fit the stalk, loom and code it all to work. I had Timmus do mine recently. I know Skipton does this too. Alas they are both in the north west of the UK.

A few companies on eBay offer retrofit too. I found Awesome GTi, Manchester offered the retrofit for £149. So at least you have an idea of the process and costs.

Re; the wiper, the mech is no doubt worn. I replaced mine as it did the same, about £100 (for the arm and wiper) from Audi.

Enjoy the new car. John

Thanks John, car is getting there, tho' I'm just replacing near-side headlight bulb, blimey, what a palava! Got it all apart, bulb in, taken 45 minutes trying to get the small clip back on the rear of the bulb, any tips, can't see what it clips on to..don't really want to take the whole headlight unit out...

Hi when changing bulbs the headlight out option is by far the easiest --- in fact I have just done my nearside one in my lunch half hour. 12 mins total, first bulb change since going to hid bulbs about 4 years ago!
The headlights are held in place by 2 bolts I used t27 bit- note how the light sits positionally with bumper before removal. All alignment will be fine as its adjusted on the headlight unit not the chassis. Hardest part is removing the multi plug- I find easiest to push the connector in and lift tab then pull it off.
The wire retainer is awkward and once you see how it fits it almost looks broken as it only "catches" one side.
Cheers mike

I Agree, but I don't bother undoing the multiplug, they are seriously mated to the headlamp!!!
Even with the correct technique they can be very difficult to budge, but there is JUST about enough play in the wiring to be able to remove the lamp unit from its mounting and twist it (carefully so as to not stretch any cables) just enough to get full access.
But as Mike says, don't try doing it without undoing the two headlamp bolts, that technique is best left to a gynaecologist or similar !!!

Re: HIDs, where did you get yours, how much where they and are they legal/are they reflector type or projectors?

Don't want to thread hijack...
