A2 won't start console dead

Hi this is my first post so please bear with me. car is 1.4 diesel 05 plate. No previous history of similar problem. My son's car failed to start this morning and conveniently he has just gone back to uni so having to give advice remotely. Car unlocks ok but centre console does not light up to show door open etc. Car turns over but will not start. Various other bits show no life e.g. heater, headlights. Side lights, radio do work. I haven't identified a fuse that could blow and cause the observations. My first thoughts after a cold night was that the battery might be on its way out and have dropped its voltage and stopped the electrics working but car turns over well so not convinced by this idea. Has anyone got any ideas to offer. I can probably get my son to do some other tests to narrow the fault down.
Thanks in advance.

Glad you found the problem and sorry that everyone seemed to have missed your first post and not offered any suggestions to help  ... that's really unusual on this forum. Welcome aboard, you'll find us a friendly bunch and hopefully a lot more helpful in the future :)

Thankyou. I have read through many of the posts and seen there is really a good community. I had an A2 years ago which I was hoping my boys would learn to drive on but it got totalled by a drunk driver, replaced it with an A4 nice but lacks the character. Hope the rumours of electric A2 replacement are true. Preview pics I saw look amazing. One of my sons has an A2 now as he just loves the high tech nature of the car. Since the battery issue it has now showing the engine management warning symbol on the console. Don't think it is connected to the battery issue. Will have to get him to take it to a garage to read diagnostic code. Anyone know of A2 friendly/knowledgeable garages in Cardiff?

I’d wager that the eml will clear itself after a couple of weeks use. It may well have been triggered by the dead battery causing one of the sensors to read incorrectly and set it off.

The garage I use is 20 miles outside Cardiff so not really worth the trek for a diagnostic scan. In different times I’d offer to do it for him when he was nearby.
