Good evening,

It would assist if we know what Head Unit (stereo) you currently have installed in your A2. If it’s a Chorus or Concert then you will need to start with obtaining a LHD (just guessing you have a LHD) Double DIN Dashboard, which I understand to be rather rare, or a Double DIN Cage which I understand most LHD owners opt for.

If you have a Symphony Head Unit then you’re almost there, but you will certainly need the following items:

All the links I insert are just for information and I don’t have any association to the sellers.

1. You’ll need a FAKRA GPS antennae which fits the blue male socket at the back, some thing like this, but do search for best price. I managed to get mine for about £3 inc delivery from the Cornwall somewhere. Too long ago to search eBay history.
2. You will all also need a Quadlock to insert your existing stereo connectors into, again, something like this.
3. I don’t know what your radio aerial connector looks like like but I purchased something like this.

If you search RNS-E Retrofit, Audi Quadlock and FAKRA GPS Antennae, you’ll come across all the above links within the results.

Once you have a Double DIN cage, or full dashboard fitted, you’ll notice that a RNS-E from any other Audi will be too large for the Head Unit aperture. It will need cutting down to size, like I done here in post #35.

To get it fully operational you’ll need to connect a cable from the rear of the Head Unit to the Instrument Cluster. Cannot remember which pin to which pin, this is something @timmus will be able to help you with.

Once all is connected up you will need VCDS to correctly code the the RNS-E and Instrument Cluster so they work in harmony of one another.

Our more experienced members will be able to give you a much better idea once you show which dashboard and head unit you currently have installed. It is a DIY project I tackled but did have some assistance a few years ago when I first did it (thank you Tom).

Hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Tom

Why don't you consider fitting a modern unit that has DAB, mapping and touch-screen? The RNS-e is quite ancient and deficient, so why not upgrade it and get up to date? That's just what I've done and it's here on the Forum. https://www.a2oc.net/community/index.php?threads/rns-e-replacement.40764/

Morning David,

The OP was asking for help as has already purchased a RNS-E. There was no mention of a further purchase for aftermarket HU.

I did read through your thread a couple of years ago (very good ready by the way) and agree that the RNS-E is certainly lacking in features that a newer HU has to offer.

Personally I feel that the reduction of information from the HU to the DIS Display would stop me leaving the OEM+ option. Hopefully, one day someone will be able to produce a reasonably priced network module to have all the information displayed on the DIS from an aftermarket HU.

Off Piste, I know, but do you want to move to PM regards Space Floor Boxes.

Kind regards,

Tom

I was only responding to another members mentioning of my interest in obtaining a platinum box. Point taken, though and I have communicated previously using a P.M. A major benefit of changing from the RNS-e is ease of use! Not having to mess about with entering post codes/addresses and the new unit having a touch screen! O.K., you lose the DIS side of it, but that's all! I've got TV and video play-back, too!
