Abbreviation overview for neophytes / newbies

As a relatively new member of A2OC I have been challenged by the numerous abbreviations used in the posts/replies by the gurus/gods that we all need and appreciate here.
An issue is that the Search function will not register a 3 character inquiry, however a Google search of the form 'a2oc + keyword' such as 'a2oc PDC' will normally bear fruit (thx Andrew below).
So I thought that an depository of abbreviations would be useful (not only to me).
If one of the moderators / forum admins wants to take over this post and put it in a better place, please do so.
Or if this information is already collected and available elsewhere, pls add the link and close this post.

And please post corrections and additions and needs/queries - And I will endeavor to hold the original post updated now and again.
This post is intended to be WIP - Work In Progress

MFSW - Multi-Functional Steering Wheel

Your idea has merit, and when the abbreviation list is considered complete maybe should be edited and be made a sticky. I expect there is a complete list on the net somewhere.

Yes, it is very frustrating the forum search will not permit 3 letter keywords, almost madness on a car forum,
however a Google search of the form 'a2oc keyword' such as 'a2oc PDC' will normally bear fruit.

ABS - Anti-Lock Brake System.
DD - Double Din, but Din itself is a German abbreviation, akin to UK BS (British Standard Institute).
PCD - Pitch Circle Diameter. The diameter of an imaginary circle on which the wheel bolts lie, 100 mm on the A2.

I am sure there are dozens more, it's just thinking of them.

I think this is a good idea. If we can collectively compile a list of the common abbreviations, it could be a useful 'sticky' for the new members.
  • CC - this is a contentious one because some people use it for Cruise Control and others for Climate Control.
  • DIS - Driver Information System, not Digital Information System
    • FIS - Fahrerinformationssystem (this is simply DIS in German)
  • CCCU - Central Convenience Control Unit.
    • CCU - Central Convenience Unit (exactly the same thing as above, but with one 'C' fewer!)
  • ADRVM - Auto-Dimming Rear-View Mirror
  • MFSW - Multifunction Steering Wheel
    • FBMFSW - Flat-Bottom MFSW
  • DDD - Double-DIN Dashboard
  • REWs - Rear Electric Windows
  • RNS-D / RNS-E - Radio Navigation System, followed by a letter to indicate the generation. The A2 was originally available from factory with RNS-D, but people tent to retrofit RNS-E because it's miles better. Both systems were branded as Audi Navigation Plus.
Other common terms exist which aren't abbreviations but that possibly merit a clear definition, such as 'floppy wiper' and 'komfortblinker'.

Cheers,

Tom

You'll also see MSG, KSG and TSG used in some contexts; they're the German abbreviations for the Engine ECU, CCU and Door "Brains", respectively.
GRA is the German abbreviation for Cruise. Geschwindigkeitsregelanlage.
EGR / AGR: Exhaust recirculation system.
G12, G12+, G12++, and G13 are all denotations for the coolant to be used.
VAG 502.00, 503.01, 504.00, 505 and 507 are all denotations for the various qualities of oil to be used. Different qualities for longlife (two year oilchange schedule) or not. They change also for petrol vs. diesel.

Komfortblinker is simply tap once, get three blinks; Floppy wiper applies to the Aero wiper issued as standard fitment as of about 2002.

Ah yes. VCDS is a product with which you can read the OBD errors of the car. OBD = On-Board Diagnostics - this is a standard that's been around for some time. VCDS is a product of Ross-Tech, and generally considered to be the original, very, very good, expensive and hard-to-understand. This is not necessarily untrue. Autodia also have a scanner which can generally remove errors after telling you what they are, as do several other companies. But again, here, you have the choice between simplicity and power. OBD Eleven is on one end of the scale - simple and relatively cheap - and Carport, VCP and VCDS are at the other, with rising cost and complexity. Pick something which you can use (and have the hardware to use! OBD Eleven *requires* their own OBD Dongle that you plug in!) and where the price reflects the amount of use you expect to get out of it. Some software will not run on Mac, some not on Android or Windows, but those two are the most common.
Tip: Don't leave your Bluetooth dongle plugged in. It's a battery drain and potential security risk.

Expanding on VCDS there are other software/hardware options for OBD and Audi's in particular............Vagdashcom is a hardware/software package which can be used to code/rewrite instrument clusters its more of a professional tool and has a hefty price tag @£500 but it is a great investment if you earn your living from VAG group cars and do adaptations or cluster changes.
As with VCDS there are various non genuine hardware options listed on the likes of ebay and Amazon, I wouldn't recommend using these unless you're prepared to take the risk of the equipment bricking your ecu, dash, ccm etc etc etc.......and in all the cost of repairs replacement units etc far exceed the cost of getting someone with a genuine unit to do adaptations code reading coding etc.

Great idea!

DMF should be

DMF - Dual Mass Flywheel (found on TDI 90 models have special flywheels with built-in counterbalance weights)

Also
VGT, VNT or VVT - variable geometry turbo found on the TDI 90 models

as an aside, both these are the weak points of a TDi90
