ABS Sensor Problem

I recently bought my A2 with the knowledge that a VAG-COM check showed a new front ABS sensor ring was required. Today I got the new sensor put on - and surprise, surprise - the same fault is still registering!!

My mechanic tells me that with this type of sensor it is sometimes necessary to change the wheel bearing too - as that has a magnetic strip in it that works in conjunction with the sensor ring.

Has anyboby else experienced a similar failing?

Hi Mike
Your mechanic is correct. The sensor ring on the wheel hub has alternate north and south pole magnetised elements so its possible this could be damaged, giving the problem with the ABS sensor.
I suspect the sensor ring is not available as a replacement part (nor are the wheel bearings) so you may have to buy a complete hub assembly.
I have never heard of this problem before so it may be worth doing a few more checks before changing the hub.

Hi, I still have this problem with mine and is going back in tommorrow to get sorted. they already have changed the speed sensor so this is a new one. just on the 17" wheel note, i have these wheels on mine and the wires seem to be miles away from the wheel.

You're correct, mine being a '52 sport, had the long cables which wore thru. First time replaced with exactly the same, so wore thru again, then the next time, one side (they couldn't possibly stretch to fitting both sides and thus fixing the problem, oh no, they want me to go in again when it happens and go thru all the pain of explaining, pleading, diagnosing and bartering again - where is that soap box icon?). The sensors were perfectly fine, just the cables leading to them were worn.

Thanks for the help everybody.

It turns out that there is a very small break in the wire (which has now been sorted).

Looks like the marketing men who dreamed up the Sport specification forget to run it past 'technical' to check suitability of the 17" wheels with existing wiring.

I would have expected better from Audi!

Guess we can consider this thread closed!

Sorry to bring up an old thread

I might have this same problem
Did you repair the existing wire or replace it?

we replaced my abs / wheel speed sensor thing and the lights are still on the dash!

The member in question hasn’t been active since 2016 so unlikely to reply I fear. Hopefully someone who has experienced the issue will be along shortly though 🤞

Have a VCDS scan done on the car to see what the issue is. Explain what exactly you have changed and why.

Check what it is telling you. The left loom is a dual function loom for brake wear and ABS. These looms do corrode are butchered and possibly rubbed through by the wheel. So check for any damage, repairs and that the plugs are also not damaged or corroded.
