ABS Warning light come on

My ABS warning light has come on, and is staying on. Fortunately the car is under an Audi warranty, so I'll get it fixed hopefully without hassle.

My question is this. For about 20 miles prior to this hapening I was conscious of what sounded like a wheel bearing noise, a low drone from the running gear, road speed dependent. I seem to recall reading that the abs sensor has something to do with the wheel bearings on A2's. Could these be related?

Cheers

Update ... I leave the car for an hour, then go to move it into the garage ... warning light has now gone out of it's own accord!

Wot's going on here?

Spent a fruitless hour or so hanging about my local Audi dealeship this morning while they plugged the car in and then test drove it, and guess what? They couldn't find anything wrong with it ... simply because the warning light had gone out again!

I thought that any warning light coming on, even if it then went off again, left a fault code behind in the memory. They say not. Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks

JH

Ordinarily, when a fault light comes on, a fault code is left in memory and VAG COM can even give a freeze frame mileage as to when it occurred.

Some modules may not do this and without scanning your car, I can't really comment further. However, I have had experience in the past of dealers swearing black is white: when my power steering failed, I scanned the car, got the fault codes and left them in place without clearing them. When the dealer scanned it, they had mysteriously gone!

Cheers,

Mike

Hmm, thanks Mike, that's rather what I thought too.

I suppose I can only wait and see if it happens again.

Is the VAG com system common to Audi and VW? I'm tempted to take the car to my local VW dealership (who I know I can trust) and see what they come up with.

Thanks again

VAG COM is a proprietary, after market system, not used by dealerships. They use a machine called VAS 1551/52, which although good, is actually less flexible than the VAG COM system.

ABS, Traction control and Coolant warnings

I too am experiencing the warning light problem. On start up the ABS and traction control yellows lights illuminate followed by the three ear piercing tones then the large red warning light in the centre. Sometimes this is also joined by the coolant red light. Believe it or not after 4 or 5 start ups throughout the day all the warnings disappear.

I took it to a garage and they plugged in a diagnostic kit but this showed no faults whatsoever.

The car is now due its MOT and I am pretty sure it will fail due to these warning lights.

2001 1.4 SE.

Some garages will fail for that some won't.Mine hade all 3 lights on abs, traction control and big red one in the middle passed mot no probs.Your brakes are fully functional and as far as I am aware its not a crime to have no ABS on a car.It is after all an additional safety feature and doesn't effect braking performance on a rolling road, so if your car meets the mot spec for braking effect then they can't fail you;)

The only one I have been dealing with is verve VW at bogside (£90 per hour by the way.I just use them for spares)thats in the Wishaw ,Law area don't know what their reputation is like as I do all my own work.:)If its just a service your after its an absolute doddle to do yourself ,that is oil, air and fuel filters.Diagnostics wise I have a contact that can run full diagnostics for £20 He is setting himself up in business as a small independant mechanic and has a cracking reputation.PM me and I will put you in touch if it suits.:)
