ABS Warning Light

Hi,

Light has come on whilst driving along about 60mph. Pulled over and restarted engine. No more warnings for rest of journey but I just had front discs and pads changed and was wondering if it could be related. Also when I was driving slowly, there was quite a loud metal squeek / scraping sound (from brakes I think). Also, is there an easy way of checking a problem with the anti roll bar? I had ordered this to be replaced with the bushes but I'm getting a knocking sound again. The knocking is happening as I drive or if I'm revving the engine at a halt. The original independent Audi garage told me the knocking was the ARB but I wondered how it could be that when it makes the noise even when at a standstill. I have only noticed the knocking since having the timing belt, water pump and hydraulic tensioner replaced by that garage but he said the raising of the car on the ramp must have been enough to loosen up the dodgy ARB. The most recent work (brakes and ARB) has been done by a local mechanic though (not VAG specialist) and I'm a bit weary of the work done.

The knocking at standstill is almost certainly a piece of the undertray banging against the body - I fixed this recently on another members' car.

As to the metallic squeek, it's either a misaligned pad or a stone caught between the disc and splash shield - I get this from time to time and it sounds 'orrible!

As to why the light has come on, dunno - possibly a wear connector has come adrift or the ABS loom was put back incorrectly, so it's now snapped or been worn. Either way, get back to the garage and get them to do a proper job this time - it sounds like not only have they charged through the nose, but they've been a bit shoddy too!

Cheers,

Mike

OK. That's annoying as I replaced the ARB on the advice that that was what the noise was but seemingly he checked the ARB at the time and it did apparently need replacing. Yes the brake noise was not always present but thought I'd mention it as never heard it on a car before. Not sure about contacting the garage about the ABS yet as the light is not coming on right now and he might argue that I should come back when it does come on.

Yes, I've not come across the noise on another car, but both my A2s have done it!

If the car was lifted on a ramp, either by lifting points or on its wheels, then equal loading would mean that the ARB was under no more stress than usual - less in fact, so that theory goes out the window!

I suspect that the undertray was incorrectly fitted when the belt work was done and that will account for the knocking since then.

I'm not saying the ARB didn't need doing, it may well have, but knocking t a standstill can NOT be the ARB.

Cheers,

Mike
