Advice needed on led headlight bulbs

A safe way is to look for Osrams and Philips with X-treme vision or NightBreakerUnlimited names. These are optimized halogen bulbs which give better lights than stds. But downside is of course life time and price. I run them in all my cars (well except one with Xenon).
Still waiting for a good reference to well validated LED ones.

Me too but got fed up of waiting! The wife's 2016!! polo has led headlamps and they are superb.

Philips H7 LED. But the light output improvements over H7 were minor, so no TÜV testing was done. Still illegal.

I have the H4 version of these Philips LED bulbs in my wife's car and they are superb. Not sure if they would fit the A2 with the headlamp shell rear cover in place though.

Hi all,

On my other cars, for LED lighting I used this business as they only stock quality components, none of the cheap Chinese rubbish:

https://www.classiccarleds.co.uk/

The guy is called Duncan and he is able to look up the correct components for you (and often he can give you a choice in terms of bulb “whiteness” etc.)

Highly recommended, although I haven’t yet asked him about what he can do for the A2 specifically.

Good call.
After my experiences 2-3 years ago I wasn't hopeful that we would have ROHS/EC-legal H7 here in a while. However, the ones linked below *are* certificated apparently, and not stupidly expensive.

I sent an enquiry to Duncan (the owner) as to what he could do for all external lighting via LED bulbs - Here is his reply:

Hi David,

According to the Lucas Guide the fittings are as follows with hyperlinks to the recommended products:

Dipped Beam 477
Main Beam 453 - these may be hard to fit
Front Fog 477
Sidelight 501
Front Indicator 581
Side Repeater 501A
Rear Indicator 581
Stop Tail 380 - in stock next week
Reverse 382
Fog 382
3rd Brake Light - LED
Number Plate 239

Audi's of this age can be a little sensitive to LED upgrades so we cannot guarantee you will not need warning cancellers, which we can supply, to stop bulb out warnings. Your dipped beam lamps may also need adapters though some A2's do not. If you are not sure, please send us pictures of your existing lamp holder.

So I would conclude from the comments on the main beam bulb that it's all doable but some enguinity / DIY skills will be needed to make them physically fit neatly

Thanks..

The H7s, that @Robin_Cox links to. are "CE and ROHS approved"
Mac
Indeed they supply that information, but ROHS is about things like lead-free material and CE marking could adress things like EMC but does not fully replace Emarking in the automotive world. Emarking (and qualification to it) is to my knowledge what is required for road use for parts like this.
This is my perception today being halfway into automotive world though my work, for what it is worth :) Anyone else with further insights?

Good point @Joga
I've emailed them to check. We'll see ...
Mac.

Update: I asked Duncan for more detail on why the main beams might be "difficult to fit"

Hi David,

The H3 LEDs for the main beam are quite a bit bigger on the back compared to a halogen lamp which effectively has very little on the back. You would need to check what room you have in your headlights to fit the LEDs. Dimensions are given in the pictures on the website. All others should be a relatively easy fit.

Your total cost for the items listed would be £198.68 plus VAT.

Warning cancellers are £2.71 plus VAT each per lamp that needs them. They run very hot so need to be very carefully mounted and are wired across the live feed and earth wire for the affected lamp.

The cost of £198.68 plus VAT refers to a request for total costs (bulbs plus warning cancellers), associated with replacing the dipped / mains, front / rear fogs, stop / tail lamps and reverse lamps with LEDs.

Who is going to take the plunge first and document how they get on?!

If and when, I'll just do the dipped beams, and see the difference before doing the mains. Dipped are (for me) the most used by some way.
Wouldn't go the whole hog straight away.
Mac.

I think that would be sensible Mac, If it were me then I would perhaps start with just those too on the front, given Duncan has been honest enough to call out the mains may not be an easy plug n' play - plus the stop/tail lamps & 3rd brake light (for safety reasons).

Yes he sent me the same text when I asked about the LEDs for my other classic, a 1969 BMW.

He knows his onions on this topic, that's for sure.

I have fitted Novisight led bulbs to the dipped / main and fogs on my new transit sport van and they are brilliant with no canbus errors . Think all three sets came to just under £50
