Advice please

Hi,
I think this is the correct forum.

I have a 1.4 SE with nearly 10600 miles on the clock.

My query is as follows. Every so often, when I turn the ignition key, the engine starts and then cuts out immediately. I then turn the key again and everything is fine.

The engine does not cut out when idle, or whilst being driven. It just does intermittent fault after the car has been left for any length of time i.e. overnight, or in work car park.

The car has just started doing this on a more regjular basis.

Is this a misfire? Anything to do with the fuel pump?

The car has recently been serviced with all 4 spark plugs replaced.

My knowledge of the inner workings of cars aren't brilliant, so please be gentle.

Thanks in advance, Neil

Hi Neil
I have not heard of this problem before but a good starting point would be to get a diagnostic scan done.

Sounds vey similar to a problem I'm having with my other car - Vauxhall Corsa.
It would sometimes start & then just die straight away. Most times after this it would restart but a couple of times it left me stranded.
New batteries in remotes made no difference so next step was a new immobiliser control unit - which seems to have cured it.
Next step would have been a new ECU (£500). Eeek.

I have checked the battery and the "hole" is showing green.
So the battery seems OK.

I will keep you posted if the problem gets worse.

Thanks for the answers.

Cheers
Neil

have you tried a spare/another key. i had a seat ibiza once and my partner dropped the key which fell into two bits. thinking nothing of it put the key in the ignition, the car started but cut straight away.

i found out that there was a little 5mm x 3mm chip that is linked/set to the imobiliser was missing from the key. the dealer said it would cost me £100 to have a new key and be set to the imobiliser.

i managed to find the chip in end, it took a good look.

might be worth a try anyway!
