Aftermarket exhausts?

Does anyone have any experience with the cheap aftermarket exhaust systems sold on EBay and like? You can get a complete system for £100-200 which really isn’t too bad but the quality might be a concern.

The thing is my exhaust started leaking badly, haven’t checked yet what’s up due to it raining yesterday evening but it’s likely the flexi pipe. I remember the exhaust isn’t looking that great otherwise either so I’m wondering whether just try patching it up or would it make sense to replace it entirely. The OEM pieces are most likely too expensive for me.

The car is 1.4 petrol (AUA).

Had no problem with aftermarket exhaust parts fitted to our 2003 1.4 SE Petrol by our local Tyre & Exhaust Specialist. Don’t know what make(s) they have been though. First bit to fail was the Front flexi Pipe. They just welded a new bit of flexi pipe in. All the rest of the system, including both Catalytic Convertors, has been replaced by them years ago. None of it has failed again since. Only thing I did find out later was that if you ever wanted to fit new Genuine VAG Catalytic Convertors then you need the original Genuine ones to give back, otherwise there was a massive Surcharge to Pay. That may not still be the case but it was when I asked about it. Sarge did once offer to sell me a good used complete Exhaust System but he would have needed to cut it all into sections to send it on a Pallet !

The flexi section is the most common point of failure and a new section can be clamped or preferably welded in. Any local exhaust specialist can do this for you. Failure to replace a leaking flexi section promptly leads to premature failure of the rear cat.

Thanks for the pointers, very useful info.

I'll inspect the exhaust more closely today but yes, I initially thought I'd just patch it up with a new flexi pipe and be done with it but if the replacement exhausts are good for the price it might be worthwhile to replace the whole system right away, otherwise I might end up having to get under the car again soon as the exhaust looked like original.

with the longevity of the original system, I don't see the point in doing cheap replacements. 16 ain't too shabby for an original system.

From a noise perspective, BN Pipes do TÜV-approved and nicely fruity duplex systems in stainless if you're looking for a seriously permanent solution.

Hi all, I've been looking for aftermarket sport exhausts, more like just back boxes really, as I'd like to add a bit of sporty sound to the exhaust. Unfortunately not even Sportex makes them, any infos where shall I look for? Or any exhaust compatibility with other cars? Thanks

I used Infinity Exhausts https://www.infinity-exhausts.co.uk/ My account of my experience here: https://www.a2oc.net/community/index.php?threads/my-new-stainless-exhaust-system.36634/
I wasn't looking for a sporty exhaust note but they can certainly accommodate you. Don't go wild!

Thanks Steve, I had a look and they look nice but £700 is way out of what I can on it spend, I was thinking more like £150 max, but Looks like not many aftermarket sport backboxes around for a2, cheers

For clarity, they quoted me £350 all in for a cat back system. Still too expensive for you though.
I could spend that money no problem if I wanted to, but I just want a bit sportier back box and for that £150 sounds a real price. Thanks anyway

Ours came from Euro Car Parts for £106 inc VAT, it was a pain to fit but has been ok since (18 months)

I think it sounds excellent at higher revs, but then again, I didn't hear it before because it wasn't road legal before we changed it.

I would love a new back box when mine needs replacing. Any ideas what one for Euro you got to fit?
