Who is the best to do the work?
To my knowledge my 2002 A2 has never had a top up. I have noticed that places like Kwik-fit will do an air-con refrigerant and lubricant top up for £45, which seems very reasonable. Is the A2 more difficult to do, and hence should I find an Audi specialist (or heaven forbid an Audi dealer) to do the work for me? My local Kwik fit (in Stockton on tees) is very good, and they did an excellent job with the tyres on my Astra GSi, so if the air con on the A2 is simple to get at, then I may give them a go. Any ideas?
Also if there are good Audi specialists in the NE that people could recommend I would be happy to hear about them.

Audi will get a local air con specialist to do it, Pay around £50 and then charge you £90 for an hours labour plus £50 for filter and gas. Directly use a air con specialist some of them will come to you house it takes less than an hour.
There are quite a few differences between the A2 aircon system and that on most other cars. For example, the compressor runs all the time but the load varies, from virtually nothing when the Econ button is pressed, up to max on a hot day with the system working flat out. This meand the problem with seal leakage due to non use is dramatically reduced.
The system has several temp and pressure sensors and the failure of any one of these could make the aircon run at reduced efficiency.
I would recommend a VagCom diagnostic check to eliminate a sensor fault before going for a re-gas. There is even a VagCom procedure for checking the refrigerant capacity which utilises the in-built sensors so you don't even need to hook up a pressure gauge (must try it some day)
