Air flap

I've been having trouble with the engine management light coming on. After a truly disastrous visit to Isaac Agnew Audi on Saturday, the one thing I did get is the answer to why the light is coming on.

Apparently there is a motorised flap of some form on the air intake and it has failed from time to time on my car, hence the light coming on. The guys in Agnews cleaned the flap in the hope that that would fix it. The EML came back on within 60 miles.

I am not sure if I am noticing a difference in performance or anything related.

Is anyone aware of this issue / part, the likely cost of replacement and the consequences of leaving as is?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Smick
It sounds like the flap which only activates when the engine is switched off. This limits the ammount of air drawn into the cylinders during the last couple of revolutions of the engine, reducing the compression force and allowing the engine to tome to a gentle stop. Without the flap the engine is likely to stop with an almighty 'thump'
Providing the flap fails in the open position engine performance will not be affected and the 'thump' does no damage but can sound like the engine is about to sieze up.
Sorry I don't know about prices to fix it

Thanks for the response Spike. I don't believe this to be the issue. He seemed to say it is a regulator for air coming into the engine. I have had troubles with the cruise control and he said that might be related to the engine being starved of air if the flap did not open while driving.

It's a bit of a pain as we intend to sell the car in the very near future and obviously cannot when the EML is on.

It sounds like your mechanic is absolutely clueless!

The cruise system problems are unrelated to any engine air flap and Spike is quite correct in saying that the only flap in the intake system is the one to regulate air at starting and turn off. This is in now way linked to the cruise system.

PM me to discuss your symptoms and we'll see if we can't sort this out.

Cheers,

Mike
