Air intake manifold control valve position sensor

1.6FSI running normally then the EPC and engine light came on.
my basic diagnostic hand held says “specification not attained on the sensor. Does the sensor need replaced and do I need to upgrade to a VCDS or VAGCOM?

It's the inlet manifold flaps.
VCDS code is P1031 setpoint not reached.
It's probably not the sensor. The sensor is telling you that the flaps are not moving correctly.
Lots of reading on here*. Look for P1031 thread.
Do you run on 98/99 octane fuel, Shell V Power for example? If not, you should (have).

Well, that seems to have worked, thank you. Gave the system a clean per that thread and the fault code has cleared! Fingers crossed that it stays that way.
