Airbag deployments & expiry

There se to be surprisingly few mentions of any airbags deploying during impacts. I hope that means there aren't many crashes rather than an indication that they don't work. Is there a Best Before Date for airbags?

There are. And that’s one of the irony’s of steering wheel swaps and the potential of fitting an airbag that isn’t right/isnt what you think it is vs the jeopardy of a ‘past date’ airbag in any of our cars not deploying properly.

Neither without risk but the perceived wisdom as I understand it is the latter is less risky than the former.

I had a Citroen twenty years ago that displayed a 'replace before' date for air bag on a prominent sticker in the driver's door shut. I've not seen one on any car since, not in the handbook either (unless I haven't looked properly ).

Page 150 of A2 Owner's Manual.
Must be replaced no later than 14 years after date of manufacture ...
Some hope

I made enquiries with Audi about this exact issue a few years ago.
Audi have since performed artificial aging on the airbags and found that they all still worked perfectly. Consequently, the expiry date, and the recommendation to replace them, was withdrawn. The advice in the owners manual can be ignored.

Cheers,
