Airbag replacement

Both of my Air bag have blown, and I will have to replace the control unit and sensors.

- I recently removed the steering wheel airbag.

I presume I need to change all the sensors and control unit before I plug in the new airbag. Do I need to reset the system before plugging in the new airbags, or is it just plug and play... ? You know the worst case scenario...

I have read treads about putting in and out the same airbag, but cant find a procedure after a head on crash.

I do have Elsawin and VAG-COM

Do a full scan on the existing airbag controller to find out coding and then replace all the parts at the same time and code the new unit accordingly.

I get a Warning when I try to scan the airbags with vag com. Says something like: " Do you really want to scan airbags. A airbag scan on models from 2000-2001 might damage the airbag control unit". I have a 2000 mod, so I pressed "Cancel"

How do I find out "coding" and "code a new unit?". Is it hard to do?

Is your VCDS an aftermarket version or a full HEX+CAN one?

If the latter, then scan away as you'll not damage anything. If the former, scan anyway as it's already done its job and you can't ruin it any further!
