I’m changing my compressor As the last one seized and can’t find any information about how much oil to put in it and where does the oil go. I need to break into the system but don’t know if any oil has leaked out already. Any help appreciated.

Morning Brian,

I changed my compressor sometime last year as it also seized. This link will take you to the thread I started to read through my issues but if you just want to the answer to your questions use the links below.

I went for a new Denso replacement from Eurocarparts which had the correct amount of PAG oil already in it.

I used the following links to assist me which should be more than enough to answer your questions.

How much PAG oil
How much R134a refrigerant

Any further question please just ask as it really is a simple job to swap the parts.

Kind regards,

Tom

If you take off the bonnet, the amount of refrigerant and oil needed are shown on a sticker, in the form e.g. 500g + 50g. The oil will be distributed around the system and at any one time, around 50% of the oil will be in the compressor. So if you are only changing the compressor, only add 50% of the above quantity otherwise you will have added too much. Also be sure to use the correct oil. Useful tips here:

Thanks for the replies. Time to have a go then.
Does that mean that you intend to do the whole job yourself, including refilling with R134a? Looking at the prices for kits supplied by Halfords, it would probably be cheaper to get the refilling done by a specialist. You would need a vacuum pump to empty the system yourself. As well as the compressor, the dryer should also be changed.

Think I’ll get the refrigerant done by an expert but want to add enough oil that the pump won’t seize in the meantime
