Alternator, Battery or Starter Motor ?

Is this the earth behind the headlight? Also think this fuel filters had it!!!
Sorry earth image not great... It's on top of chassis leg?????
I don't think that's the fuel filter, I recall that it's a carbon filter to recycle the vapour from the fuel tank, so is meant to be black.

mine had problems with cold starting, ie slow turnover a new (reconditioned) starter has solved the problem. 1.4 TDI

The battery voltage is not a way of testing how good it is, you need to test its cranking capacity with a good tester which start at a few hundred quid!

I have looked and the earth bolt on top of chassis leg is a bolt head, earth strap then leg.... Is a washer missing????
Should there be something else or I looking at wrong earth point???
If I remember there should be a captive washer on the earth bolt which is M8 with a 13mm head?

this diagram suggests separate washer although I guess over time the exact fittings may vary.

A washer seems to be common sense to me to avoid the bolt twisting the earth strap as it is tightened and maximise surface area, but could probably work fine without.

Yesss but, if a battery measures 12 volts with no load, it is definitely not fully charged, and possible knackered.
A good test is to measure the battery voltage, at the battery, with ignition on, but engine not running, main beam on. That draws about 10 - 12 amps.

Similar, I'd cleaned up the earth several times and each time it made a little difference but soon returned to the old behaviour. As I had to replace the original starter motor with one to match my MYP gearbox, I took the old one off it was also the starter motor end of the cables that needed cleaning. So, with that done and the replacement starter it was night and day difference.

Out of interest where does negative lead from battery earth to?? Is it under car on chassis at rear???
This link is the only post I know of and collaborates Howey's post with just a small bit of extra information, post 32.
