hi I'm new on the forum, the problem I'm having is i need to replace the alternator but can't find a secondhand unit with the same part number can I fit 1 with any part number as long as it's the same volts and amps. the faulty part number is 045 903 023F I can get a unit with the same number 045 903 023A but I'm not sure if it will work or not if anyone could give me any advice that would be great and thanks very much for your time

As far as i know they are 140A units
A ebay search of "140A vw alternator" showed a used bosch unit for £26
So long as its off a transverse vehicle i believe it will fit as they do different pulleys on A4/A6/A8 and passat but the actual alternator itself minus clutch pulley is the same!
Sharan and Alhambra also had 140A units fitted

Are you 100% sure it's the alternator.
Similar issue reported a while ago turned out to be a failing 'freewheeling' alternator pulley - https://www.a2oc.net/community/index.php?threads/alternator-part-problem.8591/

Cheers Spike

PS. found 2 on ebay

I think you will find the letter in this case stands for the later model alternator as in A superseded by B & so forth but a check with TPS Or Audi should prove it.

I'm probably being dim here, but you haven't specified which engine you have - I am guessing it is a Tdi based on the part number above, probably AMF-engined requiring a 120A alternator?

A hunt at one of the German oem parts providers confirms that the part number ending in F above is no longer available at all but there is an FX-suffixed part that is available (over 700Euro!!). However, using the 7zap chart, there are two 120A codes ending in AX and FX below; if you then look at the aftermarket link on the same line (two wee arrows), this then links to the various aftermarket supplier codes - between those you should find something suitable whether at Ebay or one of the online parts suppliers. Best of luck!

thanks for all the help and advice, the car is 1.4TDI the pulley came off at 60mph on the motorway. am I right in thinking I can use any alternator that fits regardless of the part number but with the same volts and amps etc I'm just worried if I get an alternator with a different part number it won't work but if I can I get 1 with a different part number but the same volts and amps and it be ok il just do that

As far as i know yes!
You may however be able to simply fit a pulley to your existing unit, always fit INA pulleys!
Supprised the A2 is 140A as most vags of this era are 120A but i know mine is 140A

I checked the part number which confirmed it is 120 Amp. The part was obsoleted in 2007 with no replacement / supersession other than the
045 903 023FX recon unit.
Within the same parts list a 140 Amp version was also listed - 045 903 023G, with 'GX' being the recon unit. There is a very good chance this slightly higher output unit would be a direct replacement

For info, my personal view is that other part numbers, even with the same output may not be a direct fit. The 'electrical' internals may be the same but the mounting lugs on the casing could have different locations or spacings.

The 140A alternator is needed to power the electric air heater in the ventilation system that replaced the Webasto coolant heater in earlier diesel cars.

Has the alternator failed or just lost the pulley , as these just screw off with a special tool available cheaply around £28 for a new pulley

Didnt know about the later air heater, but then again dont know a lot of things!
Mines a tdi 2002 with webasto and has a 140 A fitted but is a newly fitted

Had the same problem finding an Aircon unit secondhand for my A4.
Got to know the Audi parts man who has detailed information on the exact part required right down to the letters after the number. In my case the exact part was only fitted for three months production so the chance of finding one from the scrapyard are pretty remote.
My auto electrician in Northampton would fit a replacement clutch unit . Mine was changed 5 years ago !

Option codes for the various output alternators -
8GD alternator 90A
8GG alternator 110A
8GL alternator 120A
8GU alternator 140A
