Alternator tensioner

Hi all
alternator tensioner is vibrating excessively with associated noise.
Do these fail and are they prone to sudden failure?

Any advise appreciated

Yes, they do fail and although not sudden (there's noise at first as you're seeing), when they do go, it can be catastrophic.

Only course of action is a total replacement - budget around £80 for parts.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks Mike
The sum of the parts is certainly greater than the whole. I suppose 145k Miles later, is good value and many a car would have gone to RIP

The alternator pulley has a built-in ratchet mechanism which is known to fail. At that mileaage its worth checking the pulley while the alternator belt is off when replacing the tensioner.

Just about to tackle this job on wifes' 03 FSi, <70k. Anyone know the part no for aux belt tensioner? Audi quote £76 for tensioner(the one visible just below the alternator), bearing collapsed.
Also have a pencil coil as have 16688-no4 cylinder misfire logged. Along with the reccuring 17439 manifold change-over valve (N136): setpoint not reached. So I guess it's time to send the EM light home.

Any Hamilton area guys done the manifold stripdown fancy a tea sometime to throw some hints my way before I jump in :)

Really want to give the wife her A2 back as it should be - fun.
