An OpenSky is reborn!

Also, remember to renew the seals between the OSS and body.

A leaking roof would be a misserable experience if you've gone to the trouble of swapping over the OSS.

Cheers

So if I don't hate any luck with the dealers could I realistically fix it over a weekend in my garage?

Yes, if you are a reasonably competant DIY mechanic. I find the hardest part of the process is remving the headlining without damaging anything.

I would like to think of myself as handy with spanners. I think I'll give it a go one weekend and document it for this thread.

I couldn't agree more - it's not worth the stress. I didn't change anything on mine and got away with it (I think - it's been a couple of months) but that is more by luck than judgement.

I did, however, clean the mating surfaces of roof and car thoroughly with Autoglym vinyl and rubber care and peel off any stray bits of 'Metafol' - the one-use-only sealing strip at the back of the roof (about a foot long) - before refitting.

The way the Metafol came apart on the unit that A2Steve very kindly sold me and on my own broken roof was so similar that the two unrelated halves seem to have made a whole again but I wouldn't leave it to chance.

However, if you ring A2 Cars, he'll sell you some Metafol which is a good idea as it only comes in industrial length rolls! I don't have the details but Tony also showed me a custom made plate that he has got from Germany that apparently will sort out the weakness in a working but unrestored sunroof, provided that it is not already broken.

I am going to do the stuff I know how to do (clutch and suspension) on our car so I can then pay A2Cars to clean, lube and fit that plate to the roof in spring.

Hi Akeel

I am thinking of trying this myself too, but a few questions please?

Was it tricky once the headlining is out?

Did everything line up (the glass position against the roof)

Did you have to buy any new seals etc?

If the old roof is closed and will not open, can you still get at the bolts etc. to remove it?

Thanks

Steve B

Hi Steve b , to be honest I was scared of approaching this job thinking I'd had to fork out a small fortune after hearing what people were saying to change the panel . I went to a scrap yard climbed up into a stacked a2 and started unbolting all the bolts I could see after removing the headlining. The car was rocking back and forth it was a very tense moment but worth it for £70. But after rebuilding my a2 which I have never done before I thought to myself how hard can it be and took the plunge . I was very overwhelmed with the outcome for me to do such a big thing and for it to be successful I felt like a beast, ten men lol.

Didn't buy any new seals (used siker flex sealant)

Everything lined up perfect who needs an oss Audi jig , me and my mate are Audi jigs lol , also once the motor is removed it should be easy to push the panel up and slide it back

Hi Akeel,

Thank you for that, much appreciated.

Hi Akeel,

Thank you for that, much appreciated.

Steve, if you need any advice when thinking of removing it feel free to contact me as there are two screws at the top of the roof when open that need to be removed that are not that obvious unless you've done it before. The headlining is honestly the hardest part.

By the way,

My source OSS is not yet confirmed as working, so if anyone else has a working OSS sitting around please do let me know how much you want for it

Thank you all for your help so far :D

My Daughter is switching A2s and her "new" one is very nice, but it does not have climate and the roof is "brokensky" so with no climate and no roof, it is going to be a warm drive for her in the summer.

I know this was a very old post but is Tony still doing this? Does anyone else offer this service?

Thanks

He is and has just fitted the mounting plate to mine - combined with a clean and grease (which I did) the result is impressive...
