android tablet instead of double din ?

has anyone fitted a removeable tablet instead of going down the double din route ? . no having to mess about fitting another dash or having to cut or modify a double din to fit etc

For me, touch screens are a no no. Eyes on the road, and hands on the wheel. Rotary controls, or push buttons with tactile feedback are the only (imo) safe driver interface.

This is where another multi function steering wheel will come into play ... I will have a separate nav in eye sight . But a head unit that has all the gizmos I need will be on the cards for sure ..

Phone plus Bluetooth adapter for the OEM HU, and you're away. Sat Nav (up to date maps, free, and real time traffic), hands free calls, music, digital radio, SD Card on some too. Voice control for most functions.
All plug and play, no complex mods, not expensive, and fully reversible if you sell the car - not that you would, of course ?

Why not? Phones and tablets have the same functionality (but tablets are a bit passe now, overtaken by Chromebooks).
OBD is widely availability via Bluetooth and apps. OBD Eleven is a good example. (Torque Pro and me7logger if you're really keen).
Phones support mobile hot spot.
Etc etc.

i have the torque pro app and it works great in my last car .. i like have the tech at my finger tips . and the factory head unit will not support what i want / used to for the past 5 years so not being able to access that info would make me a bit anxious about trusting factory gauges etc ..

My old set up

I've seen such a revision. I even wanted to buy this car, but it didn't work out. A 3-D matrix was made instead of air ducts and the console was altered

@WayneoA2 Have you thought of getting Colour DIS fitted, it has the functionality your looking for and replaces the dis screen in the instrument cluster together, it has a whole list of features that you’d find useful and you can partially do away with VCDS as you can read/clear error codes. You could then just use your phone for satnav?

@timmus and others have posts on it and there are others showing it’s huge number of functions.

Pretty sure it's not going to give me the info I want ... with torque pro I can have 6 gauges all working at the same time with real time data .. plus I can add a number of more gauges for different info ..... phone will be connected via bluetooth to the new head unit . This is the info I am used to having access to in my old car .. I found it far better and reliable than the dash cluster guages

You can have most of that info and more, just on a smaller screen and configurable. It wasn’t an OEM option as it’s a retrofit but accesses every bit of engine data available and at no point would I consider it unreliable. Have a read about it as I went down this route and love it. Clearly each to their own but just wanted to make you aware of an alternative.

I used to hope to see another A2 while driving about. But now, knowing they are all looking at their Colour DIS, and Torque Pro multi gauge displays, giving scant attention to the job in hand (ie driving safely), I hope I don't!
Mac.
