Annoying (still undiagnosed) rattle from front suspension

Hi Steve

They had a look at the car and the anti roll bar bushes are good. They are putting it down to the shock itself. I will replace this shortly and hopefully that will be the end of the knocking. At this stage it is the only thing left, everything else has been either replaced or checked

patience is a virtue they say

Yes patience if often required with car problems.

I have not heard of any noisy shock absorbers, but the top mounts can go, so hopefully they will fit new top mounts and bearings as well as the front shocks.

Once the noise has gone you will find yourself turning down the radio just to hear the silence!!!
Getting rid of a rattle is VERY satisfying.

Hi, did anyone ever find a solution here please. I've got the same issue, and 2 garages have tried , but to no joy. One replaced a drop link, and the other a passenger side strut mount. Really appreciate any updates, as it is becoming annoying and expensive 😕

Grab the top of each wheel and pull outwards hard and vigorously, this made evident a heavy knock I had, it was possible to see the shock flexing, turned out the strut top nut was loose and had elongated the top mount plate and worn away the threaded section on the shocker itself. Everything looked original but having seen some of the bodges on the vehicle anything is possible!

If you have a knock from a drop link or ARB bush and take it to garage stating your issue and they fail to notice the defect (especially in a drop link ball joint) then to me that garage is best avoided as it's such a common, first thing to check item!

Assuming the two different garages have some competence then they will have confirmed all is tight and all joints and bushes are sound.
So as far as safety is concerned you should be ok.
Of course diagnosing remotely is impossible without inspection first.
However, my best guess is its a damper..
But could be other things. Strut top nut loose, top mounts loose, cracked spring.
All easily overlooked by inspection.
I assume the two garages who looked at it actually drove the vehicel and confirmed the noise?

Another one to check - play in the steering rack - some kind soul sent me the instructions on how to adjust the slip out of it; which I will follow during Audrey’s impending oil change service - I too have a light rattle from the near side over certain bumps that refuses all attempts at diagnosis!
