Turbo underboost apparently.

I have no power over 2000 rpm and the engine seems slow to return to idle rpm after a rev

Now I read this using an obd wifi dongle and ipad. Am I likely to have missed some?

What is the likely cause of this. I'm thinking split pipe, or DV? Can't hear any hissing?

I'm hoping it is something cheap to fix.

Chris. Cheesed off.

It is a long shot, but we had this and checked EVERYTHING, strangely enough it turned out to be thick black stuff in the diesel.

Probably got in from a fill up a few miles earlier.

The underboost message was basically saying that the power was down (due to the gunge).

But the most common cause is a split pipe / intercooler. You won't always hear a hissing and it could be intermittent.

Our Daughter's A2 started to have occasional loss of power and now I have an intercooler sitting there ready to go on (there was a split and oil leaking from it on the intercooler.

I see no gunk on the inter cooler, the pipes 'look' Ok which ones should I be paying most attention to?

How did you get rid of the gunk n the diesel? I've done 200 miles on this tank so far.

If the intercooler is showing no signs then it could be a split pipe or one of he smaller vacuum pipes come off (they are towards the rear of the head on he left hand side, as you ook at the engine).

The tank had to be drained, a new filter and a few litres of diesel flushed through.

But it sounds like this is not your problem if you have driven 200 miles on the tank (unless you are near empty and sucked something up)

But it does sound like you may have a different cause altogether.

This is just another intermittent problem. Similar to the limp mode I got on day 1 driving back from oop north. I'll check the pipes at the weekend weather permitting. Maybe I should just replace them anyway.

One, thing. There does seem to be a plastic 'button' stuck in the back face of the inter cooler. It is loose and wobbles when touched, but no leaks? Any idea what that is for?

What black button?

This is a new intercooler can you indicate where your button is?

It's quite difficult shoving an IPad in an engine bay to take a photo. From your reply, it looks like FOD. But here is no leak So i'm not fiddling with it.

As you can see from the new intercooler there is no such button.

But if you are saying that there is no leak from that area then however strange that is, it isn't the cause.

Has anyone else got a button there on theirs?

Steve B

So this is air cooling right? Not entirely sure how an intercooler works TBH. In that case, I guess there could be leakage, but there isn't any obvious oily mess. Quite where this button/clip came from is a bit of a mystery. I don't want to take it out incase I do do some damage.

I think I may be paying a visit to Stealth for service and general health check sooner than planned.

Hi, Vince will sort it out for you.

The intercooler works as follows

The turbo is spun by the exhaust gasses (so VERY hot) this blows the air into the intake which therefore also gets hot.
The air is blown through the intercooler to cool the air down, so the intercooler only has air in it.
Cooler air is more dense and so you get a power increase and this is why some people fit larger intercoolers on some cars, to get more power.

If yours is leaking air the sensors spot this and warn you (as yours is)

I suppose that it is possible that it has a leak and someone has tried to plug the leak with the "button" Pushing it into the hole?

Steve B

Yes, it is therefore a standard fitment and must be to hold a temperature sender or similar as suggested earlier by someone.

I hope someone can post the definitive answer.

Steve B

Really sorry to blow the thick layer of dust off this thread. The "button" and the small extra spigot on the lower end of the intercooler have no purpose on the A2. I suspect that the intercooler was / is used on another model that had a sensor where the "button" is located and another pipe clipped into the fork that surrounds the small spigot. The small spigot is not drilled out on the A2 BUT if replacing the intercooler make sure that either the manufacturer or mechanic / owner has not drilled it as it will leak air and oil from the open port.
