hi everyone, i'm new here and as i'm actively looking for an A2, i need a few pointers. Is the rear bench seat an option for seating 5 or will any A2 seat 5(at a squeeze)? was there a year of production when significant improvements were made? my budget is up to 7k max so i'm looking at earlier cars anyway.
Does an se and a sport have a/c as standard?
Thanks for any help.

4 seats are normal. But there was the 5 seater for free as an option. So the most will be 4 seaters.

There were diffenrent changes. The most optical were starting at Model year 2002 (production from Mj 02 starts in 6/2001). There the radio has tweo buttons not one (and all radios are CAN-BUS connected so changing the radio is difficulter or more expencive).
And the Radio-front and parts around are not only black plastic. They are covered by a black soft-paint(looking more like dark gray, not totaly black but it is black).
Also the climate control is with this soft paint and this causes problems. It rubbs off. See this forum.

I don't point at technical changes. There are some but though the years. Some came 2002 some 2003.
Ah: The old models have the old wiper blade for the window cleaning, the newer have the better Aerotwin and different spray zozzle. (better)
I am German;) I try to write english as good as I can:)

Hey Erstens your English is a lot lot better than my German:D

Andyboy you wil need the bench seat option if you want to legally and safely carry 5 in the car.
Also if you had £8,000 limit then you could get a good A2 TDi Sport 90bhp 2003 model for your money (with bench seat).
Only saying that cos mine will be for sale next month!!.)

Welcome to the forum by the way, you will find everyone very helpful and friendly on here.

Regards Andy.

Later models have the big tank which is much better as you don't spend your life in a fuel station, from 2002 I think.

can the bench seat be added to a std car?
is air con on the se and sport as standard? or was it an option, something i must have.

Not sure about the air con, mines got climate control.
However it is not possible to change the rear seats from split to bench or visa versa, members on here have tried.

Hi andyboy
I know we all tend to use the term 'aircon' but as Andyman indicated, A2's are only available with climate control. This was originally standard on early SE models, then it became an option (sometime in late 2002 I think) and then it was made standard again, probably in late 2004. Check carefully when you buy a car as I have seen a few advertised with climate control which did not actually have it. If you don't already know, with CC fitted, the panel below the radio unit has push button controls and a small digital display for the temperature setting. Manual systems have large circular heater controls.
We have 3 model year brochures listed on the forum which may be of help - see link

Second point: Yes I am shure It was an option but should be (must be) includet in the package thw SE and sports have. (it was in the advance-package in German versions).
First point: You can NOT change the two single seats in the rear to a bench! This does not work anyway! (if this was the question).

Mine is a late 03 which I suppose was an early "late" model if thats possible as mine is a 90 and has a center three point belt,
oh and it will be for sale in feb(maybe I already said that!!??).
Ahem anyway good luck with your search and dont be a stranger.:D

Matrix was allways as an option available. I have it in my 2001 model.

And as I wrote twice in this forum. The next year model-year production allready starts in June the year before. So my Mai 2000 produced (first on road in end of june is a 2001 model.

identific. numer shows. 8zzz...1N00... is a 2001 and 8zzz...4N00.. is a 2004 model as Skripton also wrote.
