Afternoon folks,

Keen to get my 6 spoke alloys looking pristine again and to correct some minor kerbing on the fronts. Has anyone used the services of any companies in and around Cambridge that they could recommend or likely prices for such? Much appreciated. Paul

Chips Away used to have a franchise place in Cambridge and they did a very good job for me when I put A3 alloys onto my A2. I believe the team moved from there to Huntingdon. A year or so ago I explored various options for another two sets (the original 17" from the A2 and a set for a Saab) and I came to the conclusion that Lepsons in Kent are good. They said then that the cost included collection and delivery. However, haven't got around to that yet so I don't know if that arrangement still stands. It would be good to know how you get on....

Not as close but have a look at aerocoat in st olaves (reasonably priced)

Not close per se, but as per your 'pristine' desired outcome, Pristine Wheels in Woburn Sands is where I have always taken mine. Chemical strip back and a good level of attention to detail.

I explored Darren's tip today and Pristine at MK sound very good (equivalent multi-stage process to Lepsons). In correcting a buckle they use heating and cooling (which is important to restore strength and maintain shape). Two sets produced a trade rate quote. They collect within the price. As I am not in a hurry I can offer you my bare set of 17" and good tyres on loan if you only have one set and daily need of a car. Unfortunately that would add to the cost due to fitting and balancing.

Thanks chaps, great recommendation and a very kind offer. Have a spare set of wheels. Only down side to going to MK will be getting around IKEA afterwards!

Had our A2 and my BMW wheels done at Lepsons, not cheap but they do pick them up from your door and deliver them back a week later. They do not use filler, but weld new metal in and straighten the buckles. I wouldn’t go anywhere else.

This is one of Lepsons refurbs in Audi silver chrome, welded and straightened. Not cheap at £107, but literally better than new.

I'm in process of having a refurb for my TT alloys with Rimtec in MK. Should be picking up tomorrow pm. Their process and facilities look identical to Pristine Wheels, just waiting to see what they manage to do for my £72 for each wheel (includes the centre-caps and the VAT).

Just got my wheels back from Rimtec in MK. They're obviously well-regarded, I felt slightly out of place in a 17-year old A2 alongside several high-end SUV customers with wheels on this run of refurbs.

Overall I'm very happy with the results, three wheels are absolutely perfect, one has a small flaw on one spoke and a slight bloom in the paint on another, neither of which I'll be able to see as soon as there's any road dust on them. The centre-caps weren't quite as well prepared before spraying, so while they're fine at any distance over arms' length, I can tell close-up where there were already pits & scratches in the plastic. This won't detract from anything when they're on the car, and since they weren't even charged for despite my reminding the guy doing the bill, I'm not looking at all unfavourably on them.

Perfect wheel, with resprayed and a non-resprayed centre cap, not a bad paint match at all (I had removed all the badgework before the refurb).

Slight flaw on top left spoke, slight bloom on top right. Apologies for poor picture but the phone camera struggles when as close-up as you need to be to see them.

Inside, and all four. The imperfect one is second left, you really can't see anything from this distance.

My conclusion is, if you are a perfectionist and want a guaranteed 100% immaculate job, I'd probably use Pristine Wheels. Otherwise, for 9+ out of a perfect 10 sort of job that's fine to all intents and purposes, you can't go wrong with Rimtec for £66 (inc. VAT) per wheel. Apparently they use a harder lacquer than Pristine Wheels do, so the job as a whole is also likely to be longer-lasting. I might be taking my other set of TT's there at some point, and I'd be equally happy giving them the Volvo's wheels to do.
