Its a 2002 1.4 tdi which starts without hesitation and ticks over all day at around 950 rpm.....the car is smooth up to 1600 rpm and then, although the turbo kicks in, it starts to stutter, as though its running out of fuel. It continues to accelerate but jerkily and even when cruising on a steady throttle, or going down hill, if the revs are above 1600 it is jerking the whole time. I have a Bluedriver Bluetooth scan tool and after a 100 mile drive today a scan revealed absolutely nothing. I have in the last few days replaced the temperature sensor, the camshaft position sensor and the injection loom with new branded parts....no Chinese junk....but non of this has made a blind bit of difference.....I'm now thinking along the lines of perhaps a turbo leak or fuel pump...I've had the sender out of the tank and cleaned it, the filters were all replaced in the last few months, but I drained the fuel filter just to check....clean as a whistle.....getting panicked now...ECU maybe on its way out ???
Can anybody help me with this please ??? Gary

Hi Gary,
I live Hartlepool so i will try and help you out with my VCDS hoping it will flag a code up and give you some guidance where to look next.
now with jerky acceleration i had this symptom on my blue tdi which turned out to be fuel filter in the end (cheapest part) but you say you have changed this recently.
give me private message and we’ll try and sort some thing out. Speak soon

If there are no fault codes it's much more likely to be a mechanical problem. Tandem pump or air leaking into the fuel line between the tank and the former?

Cleaned both MAF and MAP sensors this morning with isopropyl alcohol....no change...drove over to meet Ross who checked the fault codes with his VADS …...no codes current...….so I'm guessing its Fuel pump related.....I noticed when I changed the fuel filter that there was not fuel from the hoses when disconnected, no more than literally a couple of drops......then noticed today that with the ignition turned on but engine not running and the bonnet off there was a noise like a solenoid makes when you have a flat battery...….it was coming from what looked like a relay on the nearside with a green hose attached to it from above....looks like this links to the back of the engine some place. Could this be the fuel pump relay ? Should it be clicking like that......You can feel it purring when it is touched.

There's no fuel pump relay - the tandem pump is purely mechanical.

Looks like we were right Rab…….just this evening noticed the fuel pump leaking from the seals...… now where is the cheapest place to get a Bosch pump and gasket ?

I bought a Bosch pump from Autodoc for £168 - it didn't come with a pump to head gasket. You could try repairing your current pump with a kit from Darwen Diesels. Their kit for a Luk pump is 18D2050. They also have a kit for the Bosch pump as well (18D2040). They both include a pump to head gasket.

Thanks fellas, I ordered a new Bosch pump online from ATG automotive via ebay, it was about £186 with a 5 year warranty and will be delivered tomorrow, a two day delivery rather than two weeks coming from most German suppliers...I found a gasket at a VW group specialists for under a tenner.

The saga continues...today I received and fitted the pump.....and it has made absolutely no difference, and after a 20 miles test drive I am now completely stumped and thoroughly fed up...I have thrown around £500 at it now and I still have no improvement....is there an A2 guru on the forum that would be willing to take a look at it for me ?

Is there a time line to these symptoms?

U mention limited fuel loss from the hoses when swapping filter
When swapping the fuel filter did u clamp off any hoses
Possibly deformed as a result restricting flow?
Or if you disconnected the hoses are they reconnected in the correct way

I only recently bought the car and it started on my way home from collection.....no clamps were used on the filter hoses.....I understand you assuming I'm a clueless idiot but as an ex motorcycle mechanic I'm not that gormless......at least I hope I'm not !

Any progress ?

Since the issue seems to happen around 1600 engine rpm regardless of engine load, just wondering if that points to a severe restriction on the supply line from the tank. Could even be possible a hose is collapsing under the vacuum effect when the tandem pump is running at high speeds

Cheers Spike

Hi Spike, As it starts to happen at 1600 revs and continues right through the rev range after that I would be inclined to agree, but if that were the case the faster the engine speed the more the vacuum would restrict the fuel pipe, but if anything its better when you put your foot down.....though I have noticed in contradiction, that when climbing a big hill (I live on the Pennines) it does get very wheezy and seems to lose power towards the top of a long climb. There is no sign of leaks under the car which I would have expected if there was an air leak in the fuel hoses, so I'm still baffled....maybe somebody can recommend an A2 specialist who isn't just interested in lining their own pockets to help ???
