Hi all.
Just purchased a very run down(not used since 2008!) mk2 Golf gti 3 door 90 spec 1.8 8valve in brilliant black metallic (LA9V paint code).
Does anyone here own one?
Thanks Steve

Regret selling mine years ago. I had a 1991 16v two door and a 1990 8v. Both were brilliant but the 16v was awesome.

I had a Golf and Jetta GTi back in my youth in the 90’s, ran a tatty Golf GTi in 2010 which I stupidly sold thinking it wasn’t a suitable family car. I’m now trying to negotiate the rescue of a 91 J plate GTi in white from the back yard of a rapidly decaying garage in deepest darkest Sussex. Can anyone lend me a chainsaw and a tow truck to get the poor thing out?!

Not now, but owned an Oak Green big bumper 16v for a while and loved it. Tried one more recently and it felt horrible; I don't know if it was just a poor example or just a victim of rose tinted glasses. I've had a couple of mk3s including a lovely low mileage one owner VR6 Highline I foolishly sold!

One good thing about the Golfs is that there's massive parts and expertise support out there.

I also owned one, a 5 door oak green 91 J 16v with big bumpers and power steering. I previously had a Mk1 1800 GTi in Helios blue for 13 years before selling it for the Mk2, regret it to this day.

I have a lot of knowledge of these cars as I did all my own servicing, lowered them added sport exhausts etc etc

Did you buy it with the intention of storing it to make some $$$ ..
I am thinking about buying a classic and storing it for a bit .. thinking either E30 M3 , E34 M5 or MK 1, 2 ESCORT

About ten years ago I bought a low mileage Porsche 964 as an investment for £22k. It had been maintained without regard to cost and drove superbly. The price of this model had started to strengthen and I reckoned there was a way to go.

Four years later I sold it to a collector for £32k, so my feel for the market was spot on and I cleared 50% in 4 years.

Except I had to pay £8.5k on a full engine build when the 45k mile, perfect service history, bullet-proof Mezger engine ran a main bearing.

Still, it was fun, and better than keeping £22k in the bank!

Nope this is deffo a last chance saloon car. Not currently running(but cranks over) car has been off road since 2008. Seller assured me, he periodically started the car in storage for upto 5 years and drove it for a short distance. Then car failled to start? Car has spent last 3 years stored outside under a tarpaulin for last 3 years. Interior is in reasonably good condition (very dirty/mouldy) battery tray is rusted out, both front floor panels require welding(possibly renew) new front wings, slam panel, radiator panel and a complete renew or refurb of brakes/suspension . And thats not including getting engine running. The list is getting longer by the day, but for how much i paid for it, could turn out to be a very good buy.

There is so much wrong there but it can all be fixed. You need to join the MK2 Owners club (https://www.vwgolfmk2.co.uk/clubforum/index.php?wwwRedirect) as a paid member and get to know the MK2 breakers.

They are good but it depends what you have driven since. I see you have owned a Porsche, a standard MK2 will never compare.

I bought my wife a Mk1 Golf GTI Cabrio back in the 90’s she loved it, then it was stolen from a Milton Keynes Car Park. Never to be seen again.
probably shipped out the country in a container or stripped for Parts
