Are there 2 tensioners for the cambelt?

Well Audi Eastbourne gave me a quote for the cambelt and tensioner and waterpump £377 fitted. I have just had a call from them whilst they are working on it and say there is a secondary tensioner with some play in it ( "which could go in 6 months" ) and this will be a further £25 + vat. I said I was quoted for the tensioner...they say this is another one extra to the kit that say Stafford Audi would fit. I appreciate the call from them but surely they should have quoted me this initially? What do you guys think, are there 2 tensioners to replace?

Nope - they're talking absolute cobblers here!

There's the main cambelt tensioner, the relay roller and that's it! The cambelt passes around the crankshaft pulley then the relay roller, then the water pump, then the camshaft pulley, the tensioner and back to the crankshaft (this is going anti clock).

The only other tensioner is for the auxilliary belt (the one that drives the alternator and climate compressor if fitted), but this is a lot more than £25+

Cheers,

Mike

As i am thinking of using the services of Audi, Eastbourne, I look forward to learning the outcome of this one!

Got the receipt, it says " also fitted the cambelt idler tensioner as play evident" I feel they may have given me a discount as Im an A2OC member, but then added an extra thingy to make it back !

The extra thingy they've added is in with the cambelt kit, so you've been charged twice for the same part! To make doubly sure, you can ask them for the part number (PM me with it and I'll ascertain whether you have been diddled!).

Cheers,

Mike

Many thanks Mike,
I will call them again tomorrow. They were very helpful otherwise, washed and hoovered it, free winter check and picked-up and dropped-off the car to my home. They also fitted a wiper blade (£12.94 plus vat) for free, yes they actually unclipped the old one and pushed in the new one for no charge!
Seriously though, if they have charged me extra I will never go there again.

here is the info on the receipt :
S/fit cambelt,tensioner,water-pump and antifreeze £377.00 inc ref ps price match replaced the cambelt, tensioner and water pump and topped up coolant to the correct protection level (they told me they would replace the coolant) ***also fitted the cambelt idler tensioner as play evident***
£217.80

TOOTH BELT 038109119P £41.81
ROLLER 045109243F £46.66
WATER PUMP045121011HX £31.68
COOLANTADS £7.12
NUT £0.16
TOTAL CHARGE FOR CONCERN£352.35
WIPERBLADE £12.94

PARTS £147.49
LABOUR £ 217.80

TOTAL GOODS £365.29
VAT £ 54.79

TOTAL £420.08

So they have charged for the extra mystery tensioner within the labour charge...?!

What do you make of it??

As Mike indicated, there is a timing belt kit which includes the belt, tensioner roller and a small relay roller plus replacement fasteners. The kit (p/n 038.198.119 or 119A) is cheaper than buying all the parts individually which is how they seem to have charged you. It sounds like they have replaced the relay roller (which they call a tensioner) so I'd ask them to price the kit, compare this with the price you have been charged for the individual parts then ask them to refund the difference.

Cheers Spike

good news

so I emailed Audi Eastbourne with some of your points....
they rang back pretty quickly. Firstly they were saying its a grey area, they were just doing the same as Stafford Audi (though Stafford are doing it for £275 no water pump) but they didnt want to scare off A2OC members so they would give a refund. Now this was only the price they quoted me after a long discussion re labour costs for the pump etc. Then a while later they rang back, very apologetic saying that there IS a cambelt kit (part number ends in C) and they were embarassed etc. So I get the refund thanks to you guys I have saved £30. :D
..I shall put it towards my glovebox door which I broke today :(
swings and roundabouts eh?......

I would not recommend Audi Eastbourne. They even refused to fit a new instrument unit with MPH to my 1.2Tdi. Audi Worthing are much better.
