Ashtray - A few Questions

I love this forum, thank you guys for all of your help so far.

I have a slight situation with my ashtray that needs resolving.

It got stuck in. After a day and a half of trying to get it out by ruining my hands on the "cubby hole" above the ashtray I finally got the cubby hole facia off then managed to push in the clips retaining the tray.

I then undid the screws retaining the ashtray and started to work out why it's stuck.

For the life of me I can't see the problem. I'taken this thing apart shoved in Lithium grease everywhere.
Checked the tension catch rod mechanism which locks and unlocks the Ashtray when you push it in. That has also been well greased.

There was only one issue I thought might be the cause which was a slightly bent runner on the left hand side.
I corrected that and the only improvement this has made is that the ashtray opens and opens slowly 1/4 of the way out then stops.
I have to pull the ashtray further to make sure it's fully out.

What does your ashtray do?
I assume it's supposed to be a soft opener and closer. Push in to close, Push in to release then open fully but slowly?

Any ideas? I don't smoke but would like to figure out why this does not work anymore.

The pics supplied are after a lot of dismantling the putting back together.

I think I've sorted it. Based on two little bumps on the runners the ashtray is only supposed to come out 1/4 of the way.

I hope.

It's now all back in the centre console and appears to be working.
Hope my pictures are useful to someone.
 
i accidently mashed my ashtray when i tried to remove it without unscrewing it.

i could have sworn that it used to 'soft open' all the way before, but after dismantling it and doing as you have, it now only opens 1/3rd of the way too. i have to actually pull it the other 2/3rds

either this is normal, or we've both broken our trays!

Having just acquired a second hand ashtray, my A2 didn't have one at all, just the LED, I can see your problem.
The new one I got came without connected spring. I just pulled it out an reconnected it to the body and quite honestly, it kind of works but doesn't come out all the way. So I was thinking that there may not be enough tension in the spring. I'm going to try winding it around again and then connecting it up, increase the pull. It did seem rather easy to extract the spring and re-attach it.

Hi I Know this is an old thread, but I bought a car with the ashtray out, but it looks fine. I can’t figure out where the spring goes. Anyone please?

I don't have a photo available but from memory it unwinds under the top covering of the unit and clips on at the front, there should be some recesses there to accept the 'fins' at the end of the spring. As the ashtray opens, the spring is actually pulling it outwards as it winds itself back into a circle.
 
Our A2 Ashtray no longer Opens by giving it a little Push. That’s what I think it did from New ? Have to put a Hand underneath and Pull it out. Never been smoked in. It’s full of Spare Tyre Valve Caps, Undertray Screws, Fuses other bits and pieces.
 
I have a couple of ashtrays available that work correctly, and also a non working one that could be useful for parts, happy to post out if anyone needs them, can do them for £13each posted, I know it isn't the for sale section, just giving options for folk on this thread.
