Audi A2 1.4 TDI Gearbox 3rd Gear Crunch

I believe that the ‘crunch’ on third is a worn synchro ring rather than an issue of alignment. Apparently it’s pretty common (I get it myself if I’m accelerating hard for some reason - rare)

I’m on 227 but it’s been doing it since I got it at 160 or so.

There are a couple of threads where people have added molyslip or another gearbox additive to try and reduce the issue I think.

I just take it easy so it doesn’t happen

My tdi90 has just developed the 3rd gear crunch when i make quick gear change, 2nd to 3rd. The box is smooth in all gears, just the crunchy 3rd. new oil did nothing. the tower is pretty good but the plastic bushes seem to have quite alot of play in. I'll try changing them soon too, but guess its the synchro as detailed above, i'll update if i solve it. i'm on 140k cheers

Certainly sounds like worn synchro rings
Common on 3rd as it’s the first gear to be single synchro
Driving style can prolong the gearbox but ultimately it will be a rebuild of the box or a change of gearbox

Has any brave soul here opened up a gearbox and repaired/replaced the third gear sychro? I ask as I have two GRJ's on the garage shelf. One has 130K miles and was fine on removal (for MYP) the other has 150K miles and has worn third gear sychro.

I suppose my question to you fine folk, is it worth / possible repairing the synchro or is scrap....seems a waste.

I used a gearbox specialist and after they had replaced the synchros the gearbox was perfect. They checked everything else in there and it was all fine.
